Can AE 7.0 Read more then two GB of Ram?
Posted by John Jackowiak on January 22, 2007 at 3:08 pmI read the post about AE 6.5 not being able to read more then 2 GB of Ram at a time on an OS X system. Has AE 7.0 changed to 64 bit to fix this problem, or is it still limited?

January 22, 2007 at 3:20 pmHi,
No, on the Mac (OSX) After Effects can only use 2GB of RAM regardless of the version.
On the PC (utilizing the “secrect switch”) it can use 3GB of RAM.

January 22, 2007 at 3:22 pmi have ae7 on a g5 with 5.5gb ram ae can access 3gb of ram, i’m sure more ram is available but it will only grab 3gb… oh well, its better than 2gb.
i’m also using osx 10.4.8, if that makes a difference.

January 22, 2007 at 3:46 pmThe system I’m using at work has mac os 10.4.8, and AE 7.0 is reading 3.0 GB Ram. I can figure out how this is possible if the program max’s out at 2 GB.

January 22, 2007 at 3:53 pmOn a Mac – 6.5 will use 2GB, 7.0 will use 3GB. This is because some of the guts in AE changed (for the better!) between 6.5 and 7. AE is still a 32bit application (meaning theoretically it can address up to 4GB), and is limited to 3 due to limits set by the OS on frameworks in AE.
The 3GB switch on XP I highly DO NOT recommend, as its using technology in windows that was meant for servers – not desktops. Use at your own risk.

January 22, 2007 at 3:58 pmI’ve heard AE will see 4GB when using XP64..
Strange that OS 10.4 won’t see 4 aswell..it is a 64bit OS isn’t it?
Also, for reference I’ve been told that if you’re on OSX or WinXP64 you can cram as much to 32GB RAM in and if you have enough processors to make use of it Gridiron Nucleo Pro will eat up ALL 32GB of it! Now that’s fast, long previews if you’ve got the $$$!

January 22, 2007 at 4:21 pmHi
Let’s assume that Ae 7.5or8 becomes a 64bit app and i’m on a Windows 64bit pc.How much ram could i use?

January 22, 2007 at 4:34 pmWell – IF that were to happen (I have no clue) – the theoretical limit of any 64bit app is 16 EXAbytes. …..kilo, mega, giga, tera, peta – EXA….
Who needs that much RAM?

January 22, 2007 at 4:39 pmPlease keep in mind that Nucleo Pro will use up all 32GB (we’ll leave at least 1.5GB for the OS) in rendering. How many frames you can stuff into a preview (the green line) is still limited by the 4GB of RAM that AE can use on Win 64bit. Using all that RAM though in rendering really speeds things up. RAM is the primary bottleneck with AE, then disk (how fast it can read and write), then CPU.

January 22, 2007 at 5:40 pmOS 10.4 is not a fully 64-bit OS. It does allow 64-bit memory addressing, but because there are 32-bit limits elsewhere, each app is limited using 32-bit math- 4GB max. From there, the Mac OS cuts off about 1 GB more for OS-related overhead stuff. The upshot is that the limit is per application, so if you have large amounts of RAM you can allocate 3GB each for AE, Photoshop, a 3D renderer, etc., etc., etc. And as Steve has pointed out, Nucleo runs separate instances of AE, each one of which is considered a separate app and will receive it’s own memory allocation.
Yes, with XP64 (or Vista64) you can get 4 GB of RAM for any app. Sadly, the situation is nowhere near as optimistic on Commodore64. 🙂
