Use the Replicator in Motion 2. Make the whiskey bottle the cell image and do a line replicator. You can then animate the end point of the line to stretch the line and reveal multiple cells on the replicator.

Why not do an ‘edit in external editor’ from within FCP?
As far as I know, Motion projects are treated like new QT clips so they would have their own TC. Might be a good suggestion to Apple to allow the user to assign a custom starting TC for a project.

The offline media works like FCP– if you can find the files somewhere on your system you can connect to them, otherwise you have to recapture them.

“Satisfactory” is a very subjective term. All depends on things like frame size, what filters/behaviors/animations you apply to your objects, if you start using particles or the replicator, etc.
I do a fair amount of demos of Motion on my Powerbook 17″ and after working on a dual G5 with an x800 card it is painful (before that it was adequate).
It should be sufficient for simple composites and animations, but you will find yourself wanting to explore more aspects of the program and then you will feel pain.

Is it a question of drivers for the new monitors? I put a classroom instructor’s PC on a DVI splitter (one out to same monitor at same resolution and frequency, the other to a projector with same resolution and frequency) and all of a sudden the driver would only play 640×480, screwing up the desktop icon arrangements and making windows seem to disappear. Reinstalled the driver for the video card again and was finally able to make it work properly.

It outputs OSX screensavers (which can include RSS feeds) and QuickTime movies. No Flash.

What type of travel mattes are you trying to create?
And are they to be used in FCP on a Mac or on a Windows PC?
Can you be more specific as there are many ways to create travel matte shapes.
