QT has some “aged film” filters that can be applied to QT movies.
Is the Overdrive filter what you were looking for (with animated properties)?

September 29, 2005 at 10:22 pm in reply to: Motion 2 Books are they any out, are they any good?!Peachpit has two training books out, one by Damian Allen, the other by Mary Plummer. They are both used in Apple certified training courses as the official training materials. Damian’s is quite good if you are already familiar with motion graphics. He writes in a clear, concise manner and has a sly sense of humor. It doesn’t explain everything in great detail, but you can learn the app from it.
I haven’t read Mary’s book but I understand it to be more friendly to users new to motion graphics. Mary is a terrific teacher and her other books are written in a clear, conversational style that is engaging and informative.
Both books are designed for people who are brand new to Motion. The original books are adding additional content to cover some of the new features in M2, but I don’t think they are being rewritten.
Mark Spencer’s Visual QuickPro Guide (also from Peachpit) is a very useful reference book and is great when you want to look up a specific tool or technique quickly, but I don’t recommend it to teach yourself how to use Motion from scratch. Don’t know what the plans are to update it to include the new tools in Motion 2. Mark, are you out there?
If you already know Motion and are looking for training on Motion 2, I recommend the INSIDE MOTION 2 updater dvd from Magnet Media (and not just because I’m the instructor). Info can be found at: http://www.digitalmediatraining.com
If there are specific techniques that you are interested in learning, let us know. I am looking for ideas for tutorials to add here at the Cow and also on my website.
Hope this helps.

Many 3D apps take advantage of the GPU to increase rendering speed, including After Effects and Boris RED. Yes, I expect we’ll see more of this in future versions of other graphics software too.

Motion is an excellent complement to After Effects. They both have advantages and disadvantages compared to each other and depending on what you need to do. They even play together nicely (a Motion 2 project can be imported into AE and continue to be changed in Motion as necessary).
In answer to your question, this would be easy to do in Motion. You can create the falling diamonds using a particle emitter with a line source across the top of the frame, and the build-up of the diamonds can be achieved with animated Replicators or simple layering.
One of the advantages of Motion over AE is the realtime performance of the particle systems, and AE doesn’t have something as simple as the Replicator to create patterns quickly and easily.

1. Split both A and B clips close to the transition that covers them (and outside the transition edges).
2. Make a second copy of the two clips and the transition on the track directly above.
3. Open the transition above and click on the reverse direction button.
4. Select the transition and clips and nest them into a new sequence.
5. Horizontally crop the new clip (above) 50%.

Make the ALL STARS text a separate path text object.
Put it on the circle path and make sure it is selected.
Go into PATH TEXT OPTIONS and choose FLIP.
Rotate around the path as necessary.
