I am looking for a Motion book, like the Apple Pro Training Series, which I believe they will not be putting one out for Motion 2, anyone have any recommendations?

As always thank you for the time and courteousy of your reply to my Post,

    Sebastian

Peachpit has two training books out, one by Damian Allen, the other by Mary Plummer. They are both used in Apple certified training courses as the official training materials. Damian’s is quite good if you are already familiar with motion graphics. He writes in a clear, concise manner and has a sly sense of humor. It doesn’t explain everything in great detail, but you can learn the app from it.

I haven’t read Mary’s book but I understand it to be more friendly to users new to motion graphics. Mary is a terrific teacher and her other books are written in a clear, conversational style that is engaging and informative.

Both books are designed for people who are brand new to Motion. The original books are adding additional content to cover some of the new features in M2, but I don’t think they are being rewritten.

Mark Spencer’s Visual QuickPro Guide (also from Peachpit) is a very useful reference book and is great when you want to look up a specific tool or technique quickly, but I don’t recommend it to teach yourself how to use Motion from scratch. Don’t know what the plans are to update it to include the new tools in Motion 2. Mark, are you out there?

If you already know Motion and are looking for training on Motion 2, I recommend the INSIDE MOTION 2 updater dvd from Magnet Media (and not just because I’m the instructor). Info can be found at: http://www.digitalmediatraining.com

If there are specific techniques that you are interested in learning, let us know. I am looking for ideas for tutorials to add here at the Cow and also on my website.

    Hope this helps.

I am not at my computer with Motion, but I have yet to see any mentioin of the Relief filter… I believe. It’s the one that uses grayscale for different elevations. Haven’t taken time to see what it does. If anyone have used this, please let us (me ) know what it is capable of…
    thanks

It’s kinda like the Extrude filter in Photoshop where you can make it look like shapes are “pushing” through the image based on the image map object. For example. if you use a checkerboard generator as the Relief image map, the clip you apply it to will look like it’s been stretched toward the viewer by several rectangular “bars.” Can create a nice 3D background when animated.
