Pre-compose the layer and leave the mask in the current composition.
Pre-composing moves the layer into a new composition and calls the new composition instead of the layer. You can still manipulate the original layer by opening the new composition that holds it.

Sounds like you’re pressing one of the expose or dashboard keyboard shortcuts.
You can find out what they are by clicking on their icon in the System Preferences item in the blue apple menu.
You should take some time to learn operating system basics before tackling the pro apps.

I’m very happy with my 23″ HDCD and x800. Particles and animated Replicators can bring it to its knees occasionally, but I can deal with that.
The 30″ is a beauty to behold, but I personally find the icons get too small for these old eyes.
You might consider this: get the 23″ and with the money you save upgrade your video card.

Photoshop Halftone Pattern filter will create that effect. In CS2 it’s under Sketch.

Are you selecting the sequence (in the Browser or the Timeline tab) and sending to Motion or selecting clips in the timeline window and sending to Motion?

Performance will really depend on what sort of hardware you’re running on. With the right hardware, Motion is hard to beat for this sort of thing due to its realtime capabilities.
AE has a much broader toolset, especially with plug-ins, and a larger user base (which means a lot more support resources for now).
Mac-based pros will have both in their toolboxes.

Yes, you should be able to do it in Elements. Put each photo on a different layer and move/transform as necessary.
