Apply a mask to the edge of the object and apply Effects > Render > Stroke to the mask.
If it’s text generated by AE, just activate the stroke property.
If it’s a rectangular video box, select the layer and double-click the rectangular masking tool.

Reduce the resolution to Half and Comp Window magnification to 50% (to compensate).

Which version of AE are you using?
To animate letters individually (or any content for that matter) each should be on an individual layer. You can group words by precomping the letter layers.

2 ways:
A. Select the Text Tool in Motion and start entering the non-accented text. When you reach the point where you need to add an accented character do the following:
1. Bring up the Character Palette (Blue Apple Menu > System Preferences > International > Input Menu). I usually activate both it and the Keyboard Viewer and put them in the menu bar.
2. Choose the Accented Latin category on the left.
3. Scroll down to the character you want and double click it. This will insert the accented character at the insertion point in your Motion text.
B. If the font you are using doesn’t include the accented characters you need:
1. Enter the text without the accent.
2. Create a separate object consisting of 2 periods (full stops if you’re in a British-influenced country) and position it directly above the character(s) needing the accent.
3. Adjust tracking and size as necessary.
4. Put the text object and the accent object in a separate layer to group them together.

You can also apply text animation presets to the text layers (AE 6.5 and above).
Text animators allow you to sequence the animation across the letters, words, and lines.

Don’t know exactly how Artbeats does it, but you can try this:
Draw a garbage matte around the fire (use the pen tool) to eliminate as much of the background as you can.
Adjust the levels (Levels effect) of the image so that the remaining background is very dark, almost black.
Apply the Threshhold effect and adjust until the flames are white and the background is black.
Use this layer as a luma track matte for the original flames clip.

Create a mask on the clip and add a Channel Blur to the mask and set it on the alpha channel only in the Filter inspector.
