Inserting Text into AE
Posted by Crazyconfusedcailen on January 25, 2006 at 1:27 amHow do I insert text into AE? Is the solution to create the text in PS, then import? If so, what if I want individual characters of a word to perform different transformations? Would I have to put the characters on separate layers and create masks for each one?
Thank you for your brain’s time and thoughts. If you have a better, quicker, easier solution than mine, it would be greatly appreciated.

January 25, 2006 at 6:22 amYou could simply use AE’s built in Text tool, it looks like a “T”. Just click it in the composition window where you want the text to start and you should see a cursor. Now just type away.
After you finish you’ll have a text layer which you can apply effects to, change the font etc.
Individual characters can be animated using the Text Animation setting. Have a look under help for previews of the text animation presets to give you an idea of what is possible.

January 25, 2006 at 4:06 pmYou can also apply text animation presets to the text layers (AE 6.5 and above).
Text animators allow you to sequence the animation across the letters, words, and lines.

January 28, 2006 at 12:37 amWhich version of AE are you using?
To animate letters individually (or any content for that matter) each should be on an individual layer. You can group words by precomping the letter layers.

January 29, 2006 at 3:52 pmI’m using 6.5 which isn’t on my personal mac, but is at a lab at my school. I’ll have it in about a week after I put more memory in my computer. It is still going to be 6.5 though. While I have you let me ask you a general question if you don’t mind. The computer I currently have is the new iMAC G5 with Tiger, Front Row, Camera, all that. It has 512 MB in it now. If I want my computer to be able to run (at different times of course) Photoshop, Illustrator, AE, FCP, Quark, Dreamweaver, InDesign is another 512 MB of ram enough to hold and run all of those programs? I will also be getting an external hard drive so I’ll really be looking at 2 G of ram: 1 G to run programs 1 G to store my work. What do you think?
