When things don’t make sense I will copy the entire project (do control-A to select all from current project) and paste it into a new project (set the new project properties correctly first). This has saved me when projects hang or crash when trying to render. I think there are some weird bugs in Vegas after a lot of copy/paste activity, because I also see that project performance degrades over time and behave better after closing them and reopening them. Maybe a memory leak?

You could write a specific script. Otherwise maybe this:
Place a marker at the beginning of each event. Do thi smanually or Ultimate-S can do this. Then run the ThumbnailAtMarker.js script found here: https://library.creativecow.net/articles/vegas_scripts.html
Then insert each thumbnail at the beginning of each event. A bit labor intensive, but not so bad with the help of the scripts.

Very easy. Double click on the media asset you want to change on the left panel “Project Overview”. Then on the right panel “Media Properties”, click on the “Track Media” tab and there will be an audio & video property. Click the one you want to change and a down-arrow will appear, click that and select “Replace”. Chose the replacement media and you are done (be sure to match video with correct audio).

This seems to have always been an issue, not just in v10. It takes a long time for many files to be added to a project, even before the audio waveforms begin to build.

OK, I think maybe you’ve been asking a different question all along, no? It sounds like your question is that you need to know the best way to put both SD & HD footage in the same project? Then you want to edit them together, and you are concerned about the project settings & quality and visual difference when rendered?
The best way to edit SD & HD together is to always set the project to match the highest quality footage in that project. So you would set the project to match the HD footage. In some cases you may need to set the clips of the other footage to match the aspect of the project (do this in the event pan/crop, then right-click and select “Match Output Aspect”). Then edit and render to your SD output.
The result is that you will notice the SD footage as compared to the HD footage, but this occurs all the time on TV when you watch the news, for example. The HD footage will look sharper, compared to the SD footage, even when rendered to SD.

As I understand it, Sony’s AVC is the h.264 codec you need to use. Vegas Pro version 10 does have the 1280x 720p template, are you using v10?

Yes, absolutely! I noticed a difference years ago even when going from the Sony PD-170 to the Sony Z1U, and now even remarkably more with the Canon 5D. When shooting & editing in HD then creating the mpeg2 required for DVD, more pixels and clarity will produce better looking SD, for sure. It’s the old saying, garbage-in = garbage-out. Not that the PD-170 or Z1 is garbage, but times change and so does quality.

That’s all fine for just a few clips, but if you have many it would be very tedious to replace each one as a take. A very fast method that I use is to simply rename the original folder of all source clips, then put the clips you want to use in the originally named folder. Then open your Vegas project and they all get updated at once. Alternatively, just rename the folder and open the project and tell Vegas where to find the missing clip, then say they are all there as well when prompted, and they all get updated. You can always swap back using either of these methods.
