  • Frustrating not having auto-brightness, auto-contrast, auto-color effects

Posted by Steve Veach on November 22, 2010 at 5:49 am

I’ve often got poorly shot video where the videographer used an auto-exposure setting on the camera and then wildly panned around with different lighting and sometimes backlight, which then causes the brightness and contrast to vary wildly. Trying to correct it in post with Vegas Studio (I don’t own Pro) is nearly impossible trying to do it manually using keyframes and the brightness, contrast, color correction effects.

Am I missing something? Is there a technique or workflow that would make it easier to do this manually with keyframes or am I crazy for trying? 🙂

Is there some other inexpensive software I can try just for this purpose, then bring the video back into Vegas Studio?

    Thanks.

Yea, teach the videographer how to shoot properly. There is no “auto” effect to make a bad videographer look good. You have to learn how to shoot. If they refuse to learn… charge them more money to make up for all the work that you have to do to fix their poorly shot footage.

No, you are not missing anything. Most of the “auto” effects are found on the camera, not in the edit bay. I know of no such plug-in that will do this.

There is an old plugin by Mike Crash (I know, odd name for software), and it might work for your footage:

Thanks John. Glad I’m at least not missing anything obvious. You seem pretty active on this forum. Thanks for the reply. BTW, I am trying to help this poor guy out. Amazing to me he owns a $5,000 Pro Panasonic camera and doesn’t really know the first thing about shooting video and certainly doesn’t seem to know anything technical about computers, digital editing, codecs, formats, etc. Oh well.

I probably didn’t make it clear that I am using Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 (I’m only a very advanced amateur), which is the consumer version. It looks like these filters are for the pro version. Just to make sure, I’ve emailed Mike and await a reply.

These are just DirectX plug-in and will work fine with Movie Studio. Install them and you should be fine.
