  • How to swap video clips within a track but keep the placement, fades, etc

Posted by Deledi Bingham on November 5, 2010 at 9:03 am

I have a 10 second ending scene for my YouTube videos that has 3 smaller rectangular video clips at the bottom of the screen that I use to annotate and link to other videos of mine.

I’ve seen it on other peoples channels and it looks great but the way I’ve done it so far seems to be very inefficient because every time I create a new video I need to update those video clips and I have to go back into the project and do a number of things to get it switched.

Currently what I do is open the 10 second .veg project, delete the old clips, insert the new ones, pan/crop them with presets to set them to the size they need to be and then finally perform a fade in on the beginning of the track for 1 second to cross fade it with the ending of the main video.

It currently is taking me 20+ minutes just to swap out 3 video clips in the 10 second ending and I’m hoping that someone might have a few ideas on how I can speed this process up.

If anyone has some suggestions on how I can be more efficient in this process please let me know.

Ideally, if there is a way that I can just keep the settings of a video track intact (pan/crop location, fade in length etc) and just swap the media that it’s using that would be great

RightHold replacement/new Media in Project Media > Drag replace Media to the Event and release > Use Add As Take.

    Simples!

Then tap the T key to cycle through your Takes.

I do this all the time.

That’s all fine for just a few clips, but if you have many it would be very tedious to replace each one as a take. A very fast method that I use is to simply rename the original folder of all source clips, then put the clips you want to use in the originally named folder. Then open your Vegas project and they all get updated at once. Alternatively, just rename the folder and open the project and tell Vegas where to find the missing clip, then say they are all there as well when prompted, and they all get updated. You can always swap back using either of these methods.

I’m assuming that if you use this method you have to replace the files you want to use with the same filenames correct? For example when you rename the folder and place the files you want to use in the original, Vegas is going to look for the same file names that were there originally…

So if all of your file names are different you have to rename each one to match correct?

no, you’ll just have to tell it which file replaces the old.

And what about Production Assistant? Wouldn’t that be a big help in this case?
