So is it possible to set the frame buffer of the Kona to accept 24P and output 29.97? If so, how? Am I doing it right when I nest 24P material in a 29.97 FCP timeline?

Okay, first off, if you’re editing in NTSC and want a NTSC DVD, then DON’T switch to a PAL DVD. That’s just plain bad advice. Also, exporting to the h264 codec is a poor choice, since that’s already compressed. The “i50” choice will be seen as PAL footage.

Is your sequence an HD timeline? Why not go to FCP, select the sequence and let us know what the sequence settings are? If it’s a 29.97 720 by 480 (or 486) sequence, you should be able to export that without creating a new rendered movie file. And that should work in FCP just fine.

To answer the original question, yes match moves can be built in AE with the aid of a 3D tracking program. I highly recommend you read “Adobe After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques” by Mark Christiansen.

A still camera and a clean plate are obviously very easy and you are on the right track. For a moving camera I have found that using the clone brush is the best bet. You can clone from a previous or future frame and even offset the position. It’s tedious frame by frame work, but the results can be very convincing. Do yourself a favor and shoot in and edit in a progressive format (24P or 30P).

I supervised a team of after effects artists doing wire removal on a martial arts film. Over one weekend it took about 70 person-hours to do less than a minute of footage. Our biggest challenge was de-interlacing footage that was shot on film, edited in PAL and delivered on NTSC. Untangling the fields to get frames was a real pain.

Yeah, I keep hearing people insisting that exporting a movie and THEN compressing is remarkably faster. This has not been my experience at all. The REAL bottleneck (as already pointed out) is Apple’s VBR compression. It is slow and has serious quality issues (especially in transitions). I’m surprised Apple hasn’t addressed this yet.

[TJ Shank] “The most cost effective archive medium…video tape”

    Not so fast here…

An hour of VariCam tape stock costs, what, about $50.

I just bought 2 250-gig Seagate SATA drives for $99 each. A pair of brackets to mount them in my hot-swap SATA drive cost $20. I can fit about 11 hours of DVCproHD footage on this half a terabyte. That’s $20 an hour.

Additionally, I don’t need to output different versions (with and without graphics, for example). I can just save my timeline and when I need to get back to the project, I just mount the drives.

Tape isn’t dead, but it is dying.

I’ll upload it on Monday. Although it’s not nearly as beautiful as the 2 jewel cases uploaded so far.

[mykul] “Why is this not a standard feature of FCP? Is it because it is mainly a PAL problem?”

It is! Look under video filters > video > shift fields

I bought DVDxDV too. Although it’s great, MPEGStreamClip is also very good (and FREE!)

I use the 250 gig Seagates also from zipzoomfly.com. They were recently on sale for $99 each. I use the FirmTek 4 port card and 2-port enclosure.
