  • FCP output files not accepted by DVD Studio Pro?

Posted by Seasonalthought on January 11, 2006 at 8:06 pm

For some time I’ve been exporting files from FCP, throwing them into DVD Studio Pro and making DVDs. Today I created files in FCP but when I try to pull them into DVD Studio Pro (as assets), I get an error message saying that DVD Studio Pro won’t accept PAL assets. I have always worked within NTSC (never PAL) and cannot figure out what changed.

Do you all think this is something to do with FCP or DVD Studio Pro? Any guidance would be appreciated.

DVDSP thinks it’s PAL and that’s what matters. What are the particulars of the file your trying to import. Codec etc. Is it 24P? If the file meets the requirments of DVDSP then it’s SP’s problem. If it is DV video then test it in iDVD and Toast if you have it. We need more info to help.

    Additional info…

I have output the file as QT h264, QT 1080i, and i50. DVD Studio Pro hasn’t accepted any of them. The footage was filmed with a Sony HDV-FX1. On the DVD Studio Pro Board it was suggested that I change the DVD settings to PAL, but I’ve never had to do that before and don’t understand why I would have to do it now. And since I live and work primarily in the USA (and at this time, my audience is all in the USA) it doesn’t make sense to use PAL (or is my thinking wrong on that?).

    Thanks for your help!

Okay, first off, if you’re editing in NTSC and want a NTSC DVD, then DON’T switch to a PAL DVD. That’s just plain bad advice. Also, exporting to the h264 codec is a poor choice, since that’s already compressed. The “i50” choice will be seen as PAL footage.

Is your sequence an HD timeline? Why not go to FCP, select the sequence and let us know what the sequence settings are? If it’s a 29.97 720 by 480 (or 486) sequence, you should be able to export that without creating a new rendered movie file. And that should work in FCP just fine.
