on Focus FS-100 drive for DVCProHD
Posted by Bob Zelin on December 7, 2005 at 11:58 pmIs is just me, or is this “new product” going to change the world, and the way we work (and eliminate the need for HD VTR’s for low end and mid level work, when using the P2’s). I know the P2 ain’t the Varicam, but lets face it, corporate america, and low end product will embrase this product.

Clay Walker actually owns a current FireStore product and one thing he told me was that the drive was so noisy they had to stop using it on an independent film project. So both of us are curious as to how noisy the drive unit is going to be and whether or not it will be a problem on some shoots.
that’s definitely one huge advantage of the P2 over the drive FS, but I’m really hopeful the FS will be a great product. I would definitely purchase the camera and the FS if it’s quiet enough.

December 8, 2005 at 3:34 pmCapture and edit will be quicker, but when the project is done you still have to archive all that footage somewhere. The most cost effective archive medium…video tape. Should be great for some applications, though.

December 8, 2005 at 3:34 pmI have to say I was not sure coming from VariCam if this camera was a good idea, but I have to admit that it has really blown be away with the easy of use and the quality of the imagery. I see it as a great solution to something I did not think I really needed. Remember that 2 8gig cards @ 720p24 give about the same amount of capture time as a VariCam Tape does (40min on P2 –41min on the VariCam tape.)
The fs100 is a viable solution for people needing long form capture. The comment I keep hearing from people is they will need to be a little more diligent with shooting when it comes to shooting on the cards. DP Matt Segal made the comment that “it’s like shooting film – it costs too much to waste, so people will need to rethink the free run shooting that most DP’s do when video now a days”
and it is shipping in 2 weeks.

Not so fast here…
An hour of VariCam tape stock costs, what, about $50.
I just bought 2 250-gig Seagate SATA drives for $99 each. A pair of brackets to mount them in my hot-swap SATA drive cost $20. I can fit about 11 hours of DVCproHD footage on this half a terabyte. That’s $20 an hour.
Additionally, I don’t need to output different versions (with and without graphics, for example). I can just save my timeline and when I need to get back to the project, I just mount the drives.
Tape isn’t dead, but it is dying.

Yes, this is true.
I have the FS-4 and I have been using it since March or so.
The fan in it is very loud. I would compare it to the early Powerbooks that sounded like a hairdryer…
I use it mostly for corporate candids work so it isn’t that big a problem.
I tried to use it for our “48 Hour” film project and it was impossible to use it because of the noise.
They need to make a blimp or barney for it…
I would not buy this new unit without testing it out (if you are going to be recording audio when using it.)

December 9, 2005 at 10:30 pmAnd what about the just announced CinePorter CP-2…this thing unlike the Firestore, which I saw at the DV Expo and really wasnt impressed, plugs into one of the open P2 ports and comes in sizes up to 240gigs AND will be available around the same time as the Firestore. The thing that I like about it is where it is mounted on the camera. The Firestore is mounted on top of the camera, which is very awkward, the CP-2 mounts underneath the camera, flat…a much better form factor I think…..overall I really liked the camera and am excited about it, Im just not sold on the Firestore at all, and P2 is still not a all in one solution for me.

In my world, this is a very good thing, for DP’s that never shot film to have to think harder about
what they record, rather than just letting it roll. On the question of archiving though, even if you
can make a reasonable cost comparison with tape, do you trust your footage to a hard drive that
could develop corruption or even die without warning? It’s happened to most of us if not all. Is
the solution to always use RAID-3 or better storage? It’s not that I want to keep buying tape decks, because I don’t. But trusting a hard drive to be
pulled off the shelf, dusted of and plugged in with predictable reliability is beyond my level
of confidence, based on experience. how’s this going to work?Joe Murray
