  • Can AE be used for camera matching?

Posted by Shane on December 13, 2005 at 5:43 pm

Ive never done any camera matching before, but what I want to do is take a 3D spaceship I modeled and put it into some footage. Does AE have the ability to do this, or will I need another program? Like I said, ive never done this before, so if someone can point me in the right direction, or perhaps has some tips or advise, that would be great!

I basically want to put the ship flying over me and then flying off into the distance, but there are trees, and people in the way. The ship will have to appear as if its in the background. I know this can be done, but it will be a first for me.

This process is often called matchmoving, but AE can’t do what you need. The least expensive app for this is called Syntheyes, and it’s getting good reviews.

if the shot is panning from left to right or up & down, you can use AE’s motion tracker to track your footage into it. But the motion tracker loses its effectiveness if there is an zooming or turning of the camera…..i think AE’s tracker can track scale, but that just adds a whole new dimension of HEADACHE!!! :)…but it can be done. if you’re not sure if AE can help, compress your plates (the footage your plane to composite into) & post them online. Someone (or me) will be able to tell you if its feasible in AE.

I was reading a few online walk-thru’s explaining matchmoving and I didnt realize how hard it was going to be. Perhaps im looking at it the wrong way. I just figured it was going to be “somewhat” simple to add my 3d ship, and then have a program do all the hard work for me…. then again, ive never done anything like this before.

I do however, have some quick footage of a aerial shot, (plane flying over land) and I was thinking about using it to practice with. Perhaps maybe add my ship or just throw in something simple to get the hang of it.

I think I might need to read up on this subject so that I understand how it works. Im still alittle confused.

Matchmoving starts off like AE, by tracking markers in the frame. Then comes the clever part: based on certain reference points that you set, the computer calculates a “3D solution”, where the markers’ positions are translated into a 3D world. Depending on the points tracked and your reference points, this can go smoothly or not.

Nope. Have you been living in Siberia the last 2 years? What once was Icarus is now PFTrack and it’s a commercial app.

    Huh?

Voodoo isn’t Icarus. Icarus was developed at the University of Manchester and is indeed now PFtrack. Voodoo is developed at the Uni of Hannover. And free for non-commercial use.

Ah I see. So I confused them. Sincerest apologies then. Just hard to keep track of those things and I bet once it’s out of Beta, Voodoo will turn commercial just as all the other tools which will bring us back to where we started off. :-\

To answer the original question, yes match moves can be built in AE with the aid of a 3D tracking program. I highly recommend you read “Adobe After Effects 6.5 Studio Techniques” by Mark Christiansen.
