Try the VLC player also – free and it handles big files, does full screen.

I have a Z1 and an A1U and have spent a lot of time with Cineform about progressive from them. They recommend shooting 50i (I can with the Z1 but can’t with the A1U) – 25 cineframe and capturing with HD LINK in 24p WITH a 4% reduction, creating 24p, then editing that. This is supposed to be the best way because the 60i camera has to fluctuate in the pulldown to come to 24p. The 50i is a constant 2 to 1 to get to 25p. Incidentally, I think your footage looks great, however you did it.

That may be true, HOWEVER, the difference in previewing HDV footage in PP with Aspect and Vegas is like daylight and dark. Aspect rewrites the engine in PP. It isn’t just the codec. With Aspect, Cineform HDV files run in real time. They DO NOT in Vegas. In Vegas, you’re lucky to get them to run in preview mode, often blurry and you can’t tell if you are in sync quite often. This is not the case with PP Aspect. That is real time, high resolution. Also, PP is 10 bit and Vegas is 8. Hopefully, all this will change in Vegas 8 and in Vegas 64 bit. The former comes out this fall and 64 bit beta should follow that.

All my Vegas rendered Cineform avi files play in Premiere without problem.

That is slow for HD. I have a 3500 dual core that I gave up on.

Rendering in QT in Vegas is pretty easy. What do you want to do? A special size? When you go to QT click the custom button (lower right) and there the video tab. In there you will find different setting. Vegas uses the Sorenson codec. I like the 3ivx one (3ivx.com) – cheap ($20) and you get more controls in it. It gives great results, great for the internet. The Sorenson is locked and to get more control you have to pay $300.
You can produce custom sizes or use the templates. I do 400 X 225 for 16 X 9 on the net. Be sure to set it for square pixels.

I bought Sony sound effects, used them a lot but thought there should be more. Sure enough, they came out with the second edition. If you want all of them make sure you are buying them all.

Red is a great step in HD but when you see that adding all the accessories to make it work can run the price up to around $42k and then you see a low-end Cine Alta is $8k from Sony, one must wonder what are all the cameras that will come from Sony between the 8k and the high end Cine Alta? We already know Sony is coming out with a 2/3 inch sensor camera next year. What will it cost? Will it have interchangeable lenses? At some point they will and if the demand is for 4k?
Vegas 8 will be here in the fall. I think it will mark a new era – 64 bit and what else?
