In the User Preference’s editing tab, in the lower left corner is the option to have FCP ask to conform your sequences to the source footage’s properties. Has to be set to Always or Ask… If it is, and when you add the first clip to any sequence, FCP should ask or conform automatically.

Check the permissions on your scratch disk. Sounds like you need to set them to be read and write.

Check the keyboard layout, and if it’s correct, try trashing preferences. K+L should play forward at 50% speed… K should be set to be stop.

Squeeze works, and it’s always a high quality conversion.
I like Episode Pro too though. It costs more, and I think Sorenson’e Squeeze with a year of Sorenson 360 (included with it) is of great value to a lot of us. 360 is easy to use. Anyone can upload a file to it, and it transcodes it as it goes up… cool. High Quality is maintained. It’s not re-compressed like a free site would be most likely.

You could go to ProRes for both and have the same result. Graphics and stills would be 10 bit instead of 8…

You need to transcode the footage of one of the cameras to match the other… not just the frame size and rate, but also the same codec. DSLR Footage isn’t supported in FCP directly. In you’re friend’s case, it needs to be transferred to DVCPROHD…. then it will be the same codec as the HVX records, and there shouldn’t be unneeded renders.

It’s more likely you have corrupt media or unsupported media… Render files can be corrupt and cause this behavior I know.

h.264 files aren’t supported in FCP 7… so if that’s what some of these clips are, that is the reason you’re having problems… Gotta transcode them to ProRes.

If you copy a nest, it loses it’s relationship to the sequence it came from… If you place the sequence back into a sequence (re-nesting it), it retains the relationship. It’s just the way the software works. Good thing too, sometimes you DON”T want to change all nests at one time… But not understanding this behavior was you’re problem.
