I seriously doubt there will be a problem with Tiger and 4.5… but I also think that FCP 5 will run better on Tiger than it does in 10.3.9. Apple was showing ALL the new apps running on a version of Tiger at NAB for starters… I ran FCP 5 on 10.3.9 in Artbeats booth, and didn’t see anything that would stop me in my tracks… but Tiger just feels better (probably wishful thinking on my part, but nevertheless).

That said… It might be prudent to not be the first on your block here… especially if you do this for a living. Leave the shakedown to those crazy enough to do it. Like me… I’m installing Tiger tomorrow on it’s own new partition, and can certainly report back with FCP 4.5 experience with it. But I’m going to keep a 10.3.9 setup on my computer, make no mistake… If you want to run on the bleeding edge, you’ll end up bleeding a lot of the time, so be careful, and try things in a very conservative manner. Like a dual boot system for starters. When I’m beta testing for folks, I certainly do this, and it’s saved my behind a lot of times. I’d never do it otherwise. a NEW OS running a NEW version of FCP et all? Again… don’t be the first on your block, or setup another startup disk for the shakedown. Ya have to keep it going if you depend on your system for a living.

No way is any new piece of software bugless, OS or application. It just isn’t the way things are anymore (on any platform), and will probably remain that way for some time to come. Might want to wait for updates, which are SURE to follow… they always do. The bean counters that run these companies (not just Apple – all of them) push the software out before it’s time almost ALL of the time… it’s just the nature of the beast.

I read an article sometime ago about the author’s opinion that we are ALWAYS running beta software. He’s dead right. Until FCP 4.5 and OS 10.3.9 was “the latest” everything prior could really be considered BETA…

P.S. You don’t need the Pro key to run any pro app BTW…

If you don’t see a problem, you don’t have one… I’d not worry, if this has been going on for a while, I’ve never seen a problem with it.

I don’t think you can remove the pulldown on the fly and get a Photo JPEG compression done at the same time… it’s just not gonnna happen, and isn’t supported by FCP… I think you’d be better off simply capturing the material, removing the pulldown and keep it all in DV or do what you started to do… I’d certainly test out the recapture to make sure the up res later isn’t going to cause you problems.

That said, I’d not recompress at all. Just capture in full res DV and buy a FW drive if need be.

The camera “simulates” 24p… it really doesn’t shoot it. So I’m unaware of a “fix” but would be interested to find out what it may be. From your post it sounds like you capture with the “simulated” 24p at 29.97, then remove the pulldown pattern like it really WAS 24p, then it looks OK or something…

You’ll have to purchase a pro key if you don’t upgrade.

  • Simply put, from what I saw at NAB this year, there’s not an Avid editor whose not contemplating a switch to FCP… Way more than half of the pro editing stations in the world are running on Mac. There’s a reason… it’s more reliable, easier to use, better supported, more intuitive, and MUCH more cost effective running the Studio… This is a no brainer. It’s Value. Plain and simple. You simply get more for your dollar with Apple and it’s applications. end of story.

Ya know? I think that just because you CAN run on a lower end machine, doesn’t mean you should do it… Pretty much a rule of thumb is, buy the fastest out there if you really want the performance to please on any application.

Yeah, it costs more, but if you are doing this for a living, you really want the performance to keep you from going batty.

I’d think whatever preferences you’ve setup will follow the Motion project file. i.e. it will render in FCP according to the project file’s prefs.

Check out https://www.pluginz.com They have some motion plugins if you search in the advanced search of the site for them.

  • Wishing Philip and the good Dr. all the very best in the future, and must add to the laments that Philip will be gone form the COW. It was Philip who helped me get started with FCP, and I’ve never looked back. Thanks for the past, and all the best for the future.

Not really… I’d get to the bottom of the crashing though, it’s not happening here anyway. Might post more about your setup… is it all DV or? capture card? how are you controlling the deck? what drives are in use as scratch disks and how are they formatted?
