Does anyone know what Apple is going to do about those of us who want to upgrade to Tiger, but not FCP 5 just yet? Being that QT 7 is included with Tiger, and QT 7 Pro will require a new serial number from QT 6, will we be offered a free serial tomorrow, or are we just out of luck until we either purchase a new serial or FCP5?

You’re out of luck, they aren’t going to give away free serials. Has there been any statement on FCP4.5 compatibility with Tiger anyway?

You’ll have to purchase a pro key if you don’t upgrade.

I seriously doubt there will be a problem with Tiger and 4.5… but I also think that FCP 5 will run better on Tiger than it does in 10.3.9. Apple was showing ALL the new apps running on a version of Tiger at NAB for starters… I ran FCP 5 on 10.3.9 in Artbeats booth, and didn’t see anything that would stop me in my tracks… but Tiger just feels better (probably wishful thinking on my part, but nevertheless).

That said… It might be prudent to not be the first on your block here… especially if you do this for a living. Leave the shakedown to those crazy enough to do it. Like me… I’m installing Tiger tomorrow on it’s own new partition, and can certainly report back with FCP 4.5 experience with it. But I’m going to keep a 10.3.9 setup on my computer, make no mistake… If you want to run on the bleeding edge, you’ll end up bleeding a lot of the time, so be careful, and try things in a very conservative manner. Like a dual boot system for starters. When I’m beta testing for folks, I certainly do this, and it’s saved my behind a lot of times. I’d never do it otherwise. a NEW OS running a NEW version of FCP et all? Again… don’t be the first on your block, or setup another startup disk for the shakedown. Ya have to keep it going if you depend on your system for a living.

No way is any new piece of software bugless, OS or application. It just isn’t the way things are anymore (on any platform), and will probably remain that way for some time to come. Might want to wait for updates, which are SURE to follow… they always do. The bean counters that run these companies (not just Apple – all of them) push the software out before it’s time almost ALL of the time… it’s just the nature of the beast.

I read an article sometime ago about the author’s opinion that we are ALWAYS running beta software. He’s dead right. Until FCP 4.5 and OS 10.3.9 was “the latest” everything prior could really be considered BETA…

P.S. You don’t need the Pro key to run any pro app BTW…

Okay. Let’s say I buy Tiger tomorrow.

I can’t upgrade my FCP tomorrow since it’s not out until late May, correct?

Do I need to upgrade to QT Pro in order to use the export options in FCP 4.5’s menus, which I know rely on QuickTime? Or is this just for the QuickTime Pro application itself?

Can I continue to use my QuickTime 6 program until I upgrade FCP, or is it eradicated by Tiger?

    Many thanks.

Our two preorder copies of Tiger arrived this morning. Surprisingly the upgrade installation worked fine and everything is running smoothly.

But unfortunately what you guys are worrying about is absolutely true. A Tiger upgrade throws away Quicktime PRO 6 and installs Quicktime 7 Standard. The Quicktime Pro 6 key that came with my Apple Production Suite does not work.

The really annoying things is that along with two copies of Tiger, I also preordered two “Final Cut Studio” upgrade packages. So I’ve essentailly already paid for Quicktime Pro 7, but I can’t use it until Final Cut 5, Motion 2, etc. is released. This is quite a customer service quagmire that Apple created here. I SHOULD be able to call them and say “Tell me what my Quicktime 7 Pro registration number is” but the chances of that working are slim to none.

I actually really need Quicktime Pro to function well at work. I have to convert audio to 48.8khz all the time and I have a script that automatically does it in QTPro.

It’s only $25 and I’m planning to make that my first purchase after I install Tiger tomorrow.

It’s just for the player application. All export features will be available to FCP.

The $$$ amount is so small it’s totally trivial. But it’s the principle of the whole thing. Why should I pay for Quicktime Pro 7 when I technically already bought it by preordering Final Cut Studio?

There’s numerous ways to convert audio. I have Cleaner, Compressor, and of course Final Cut. But for doing a large group very quickly, I have an script for iTunes which will export all the selected songs to 48khz aiff using QT Pro. It saves a lot of time.

You could try editing your AppleScript to send the files to a Compressor Droplet which would convert them to 48KHz. No QTPro key required for that.

Yeah, but I didn’t write the script. I’m just an editor :). I actually called an Apple sales rep. She totally understood that it’s a screwed up situation but unfortunately she had no way of getting me my QT7 registration key early. So I just swallowed my pride and forked out $30.
