Trash or put your preference file for FCP aside, create a new project file and sequence and see if this doesn’t clear things up.

I think you should be running in 10.3.8 or .9… and a clean install of the OS might make a big difference. Your sequence doesn’t sound that complicated so it should be trimming very fast.

Depends on more than just the CPU… HD might take a very fast disk array to get RT from it for example… but most titles and dissolves are RT here using a dual 2 gig machine with very fast array so new dual 2.7 should do a bit better. You’ll need a capture card in any event to work in HD unless you are talking about HDV Or the DVCPRO100 codecs(which will support RT) But fast drives matter.

With the rendering times being reported around using native HDV to MPEG-2 SD, I’d think that the 1 grand you’d pay for a component analog to HDSDI out converter box from AJA is well worth the investment to “upconvert” HDV to the DVCPRO100 or uncompressed HD codecs… I’d do this in a heartbeat.

I think the TC you attempted to record didn’t hurt anything… nor did it fix it. Might try a different deck or camera, sometimes poorly recorded timecode can’t be read by other than the machine that recorded it, like the camera (XL’s come to mind here). but without the original TC being read, you’ll have to recapture the footage and re edit it in the sequences… ugh…
Might try a FW dub tape to tape dubbing to a machine like a DSR-11 which can re record external timecode via FireWire. It’s lossless and might work. Record to DVCAM tape as it’s TC record is a lot hotter and more reliable. TC tracks are burned in on each frame actually, so the recording you did at the head of the tape only erased that portion…

Tom’s suggestion is excellent, as always… but 3 months ago FCP HD was shipping sans this free addition. However you can download it from apple for free. Go to the download area of apple’s site, and search on Calligraphy. You want to download and install it for OS X (Vers 1.1)… then it will show up in the generators button in the viewer at the bottom of the list… Title 3D will do what you want mostly. The work flow is different than Avid’s though. You’ll enter text in a text box, give it the look you want, then overlay this clip over the video in the timeline window, and adjust it’s position only with the Controls tab in the Viewer not the Motion tab. The controls tab maintains the Vector Based graphics that title 3d creates.

They did address speed problems in FCP 5 and media manager… so they should work better now. It should be lossless copy as long as you don’t change compression settings.

Nest the single track you want to apply the dip to color with, and apply it in the nested sequence that results from the nest.
