I think your problem *might* be 10.3.9… I’m staying on 10.3.8 with my FCP HD system as AJA’s Kona 2 card still isn’t working well in 10.3.9, and with DV captures, I don’t see your problem… also it’s unwise to go to QT 7 BTW with Panther setups and FCP I think.
So an archive and install of Panther and update only to 10.3.8 might just fix you right up. I think the combo updater to 10.3.8 is on Apple’s site. QT 6.5.2 is OK…

I think DVCPRO50 compares favorably with digital Betacam… it’s in a 4:2:2 color space… and it’s all digital. Photo Jepg is always going to be coming from analog sources so… depending on the quality of the settings it could be as good or better, but it’s really apples and oranges. However DVCPRO50 blows the doors off DV 25 formats. It’s a lot better than they are.

I just did an encode with Compressor 2 on Tiger, and QT 7 played it without a hitch.. I’d suggest that you go back to 6.5.2.

Put the deck or camera in it’s own FW port directly connected to the Mac. If you don’t have but one port, buy a card that will give you another (like a Powerbook only comes with one FW 400 port, so adding a PCMCIA card to the mix adds another port.

Try using Compressor instead of QT Pro… it’s much better, and gives you options to make the files QT 6 compatible.

Apparenly some FW devices slow down the tranfer of other devices in the chain… so that’s why it’s best to plug in your deck or camera in it’s own port. USB 2 drives just don’t cut the mustard with Mac apparently.

It’s not the bus that’s too slow, it’s the ATA to USB bridges in the drives that are the bottleneck… they aren’t fast enough to capture with. ATA to FireWire bridges are however…

If your settings are set to FW basic, they won’t match the default easy setup for DV… that’s OK, but sounds like what’s happening to you.
If you can’t see video in the log and capture window, neither does your computer. So until you do, you won’t be able to capture.
You might try resetting your PMU switch found on your motherboard under the fan that reveals the RAM chips. Unplug your Mac from the wall first, and then just push this little round button labeled PMU in one time then wait a few seconds before restaring. It resets the FW bus’ power managment among other things like zapping the PRAM. I’ve seen it fix all sorts of FW problems including “dead” ports. Your’s sort of sounds like it’s “mostly dead”. (new high tech term for not working completely).
Be sure too that your clip settings in the L&C window are set to audio and video.

Might try exporting your sequence as a non self contained QT movie and importing that file into Compressor. Give it a name you know isn’t anywhere on the computer.
