If you want to run Motion, you really need a fast machine and video display card… but that said, the single 1.8 would let you learn, but once you do, you’ll be wanting a faster machine I think. At least there’s resale in Mac’s though, so it wouldn’t cost you much to use it for a while, then resell it.
I also think that waiting for the Intel based Mac like it will be a ton faster next (I seriously doubt it) year is like saying I don’t want a fast machine now, I want a slightly faster yet machine later… this will be the case no matter when you buy any computer, so why not start with one that will last you a few years? I think what I’m saying is a dual 2.3 machine would be a much better investment and will be a long term one to boot. Nothing says you HAVE to upgrade to FCP 6 or 7 when it comes out either… Most all of the folk who really study these things like the Intel Apple deal, are saying to look for single processor Macs (portables, and minis) to get the chips first and only early 2006, and that the roadmap of the Intel chips really points at dual core processor G6? machines late in 2007… There’s still room for speed on the G5 IBM chips too I think in the mean time, so it really isn’t going to be a quantum leap in power don’t think, rather a gradual speed up just as we’ve seen for the last few years in PC’s and Macs. There really was a quantum leap in speed between the G4 and G5 chips but don’t think we are going to see this happen again anytime soon, even with the Intel chips coming down the line..
Except for the PowerBook G4. (and maybe the mini’s…. depends on which chip is put in them) When we seen the Intel chipped PB come out, we’ll finally see the “G5” chipped portable we’ve all been waiting for. From what I’m reading around the Net, Apple will deliver this puppy long before we see PowerMac’s with intel chips in them.

Is this with a project file that you created originally in FCP 4? There are those render settings that you can apply when you open it for the first time in 5 there’s three levels now of it Fast, better, and best.. fast was the same (linear) as it was in FCP 4.5 I know… so might be something there?

I’ve seen something similar to this with some JPEG’s. My fix was to open them in Photoshop, save them as pngs and only after rendering did they look OK David. FWIW, I’m pretty sure the FCP team is aware too… welcome to a .0 release.
FCP had a big time rewrite of the scaling and I think it’s not quite done…

Forgive my assumption on your OS install, and wishing here you had posted it in the first place.
I wouldn’t reinstall 10.3.9. I’d run 5 on Tiger however. I don’t work for Apple by the way. They’ve said nothing of the kind about reinstalling the OS. I have however. If you decide to run the software in Tiger, do a clean install on a second hard drive to preserve your current one, and migrate.
Apple’s release of .0 software with bugs is industry standard I’m afraid. Been that way for about mmmmmm 16 years.

If you didn’t do a full clean install of Tiger and a clean install of FCS over it… do it.

Well, how does it look? If need be you can deinterlace the video in FCP before you export to H.264…

Select the clips in the sequence or Browser, and then choose Modify/stereo pair…
