Well when you export from AE back to FCP, there will be a shift due to YUV vs RGB color spaces. but what’s not sounding right is the “current settings” export from FCP – they should be exactly the same. MIght try a non self contained QT movie export for import into AE. That way AE is really referencing the original media files so there really can’t be a shift in that step anyway.

Steve, you’ve hit the nail on the head CLEAN INSTALL… if you don’t do this, ESPECIALLY if you going to Tiger you aren’t going to be happy don’t think.
In every case I’ve read about here, and in Apple’s forum, when problems like the ones described here show up it’s becase the install wasn’t a clean one.
ANY time you go to a new OS, it’s time for an erase and install of a startup disk. Doesn’t even have to be the same one you’ve been using at all. A second internal or FireWire drive works fine for this… installing FCS on 10.4.1 cleanly really makes a difference.

You can hear the audio in the log and capture window if you turn on the “preview” button in the Clip settings tab in the L&C window…

And probably more important, how did you upgrade to Tiger? If it wasn’t an erase and install, then reload of applications from the ground up… you might be asking for problems. some of these installs done as an “upgrade” work OK apparently, but a lot of installs done this way aren’t working very well.
Might trash your plist, and FCP preferences and things might get better, but possibly not.
Tiger is a huge upgrade from Panther, so figure whenever you do an upgrade like that, you should perform a clean install of the OS and reinstall of all apps.
I’m using a second hard drive for this in fact, and still running Panther on one drive, and Tiger on the other until I’m quite confident of trashing the old OS etc.. and going FCP 5 all the way as it were…

Sounds like you need a faster disk drive to play back the files you are creating… what format are they? DV? or something else… like uncompressed video… powerbook’s internal drive or a single firewire drive isn’t fast enough to playback larger than DV files… a G-Raid would though… and it will connect to your Powerbook.

Set your sequence settings to Offline RT… then you shouldn’t have to render at all as long as you used the stock capture or export preset for Offline RT.

Get yourself a iMic (from https://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/) and a mixer or other device that will take the mic imput and send out a line input to the iMic which then can be used as a voice over input. I use a simple USB mic for this and it works great for voice over scratch tracks.

Sequence settings must match the format of the video you are putting in them. i.e. if you capture DV NTSC, the sequence also has to be setup for this… if you use the “easy setups” found in the Final Cut Pro menu, just load DV NTSC if that’s what you are capturing, and you shouldn’t have to ever render clips that were captured as DV NTSC. Clips that aren’t DV NTSC will have to be rendered.

Just do one in Photoshop… 720 X 486… draw a box like a title safe indicator… overlay this in FCP.
