FCP 5 wishy washy
Posted by Aaron Neitz on June 16, 2005 at 5:09 pmI don’t know about this upgrade. even Title 3D is crashing every single time I launch it…. amidst a host of other problems.
I appreciate Apple moving forward, but when was the last time I upgraded After Effects or Combustion or Photoshop and features that used to work just fine, don’t work at all anymore? This is a *really* buggy release, just like FCP 4.0. And it’s not the program as a whole, but all the little support structures and subsystems that seem to be failing. Ones that used to work great. Hm…. I don’t recommend the upgrade to anyone until a .1 update!

June 16, 2005 at 5:48 pmInstall MS Explorer and then see if your Title 3D problem goes away. Explorer installs the Arial Black font Title 3D needs to run.
About your other issues, you’ll have to be specific. Probably pilot error ’cause my FCP 5 runs damn good.

June 16, 2005 at 6:15 pmThat only proves my point. Why should I have to install MS Explorer to get Title 3D to work? Regardless, I have Ariel Black in system.
I’m talking about my earlier problem with FCP not recognizing AIFF files from the mix house (even though QT will play them back. ITunes. Etc…), crashing when you scrub, crashing when you copy and paste clips, media popping to another frame when you press the “In” key. I know that on some of our systems the problem lies with the Beta drivers from AJA for their IO. And there are ceratinly problems running on Tiger and not 10.3.9. I’m loving some of the new features, but I certainly won’t let any of our editors do a paying job on FCP 5.0 until there are some bug fixes. Would you?

June 16, 2005 at 6:49 pmI installed FCP 5 on Monday and opened up a project started on FCP 4.5. I had major problems including constant dropped frame warnings, needing to render cross dissolves with only 2 video streams on the timeline, transitions not allowing alpha channel info to pass and log and capture becoming a 2 step process. I think many of the problems are related to QT 7 as I’ve seen numerous posts about dropped frames with QT 7 on systems that didn’t have that problem before. I also had jittery video in the soft border masks around some PIP footage. I had to change the motion filter settings to get rid of the jitters which meant wasting 1.5 hours rerendering everything on the timeline. Apple dropped the ball on this version. I suspect much of the blame goes to QT 7 but I can’t be sure since FCP requires QT 7. They have to assume that thousand of users will be upgrading systems and opening projects created on earlier versions. In my test this week, you can’t open an old project, update it to FCP 5 and have everything work like it did in FCP 4.5.
I’m downgrading to 10.3.9 with QT 6.5.2 and FCP 4.5. At least with that combo everything worked like it was supposed to.

June 16, 2005 at 7:07 pm“Add Handles” dialog won’t let me input a number. what’s that?
You can no longer hear audio on tape in the Edit to Tape window.
it’s the little things.
but I’ve had success in opening 4.5 projects at 10bit and DVCPRO50 resolutions.
I am REALLY excited that I can import a flex file directly in and have FCP do the entire Cinema Tools Dumbbase for me. That was always such an annoying pain. And BIN TEXT sizes!!!!! Now if that would just apply to the REST OF THE FREAKING TEXT like timecode overlays and tabs. Some of our guys switch their monitors to 800×600 just so they can edit without hunching over all day.

June 16, 2005 at 7:08 pmStrange how some people have problems and some don’t. I’ve been running with FCP 5 for three weeks no without a single crash, everything works as it should for me. I’m very happy with it, i didn’t expect this stability from a .0 release. I’ve even been working on a 4.5 project all day today with no problems.
I did do a clean Tiger install and a clean install of FCP Studio, which certainly helps.

June 16, 2005 at 7:25 pmIt seems to me the majority (if not all) of the people having problems with Tiger/FCP 5.0/QT 7 are upgrades. Is there anyone out there having difficulty with a completely new setup?
I’d like to hear all sides of the story.
Thanks!

June 16, 2005 at 8:28 pmFresh install of 5 with Tiger. The Viewer window is a mess. 20% of the time clips don’t show up. Sometimes I see them through the Aja and not in the viewer. Playing the viewer and setting in and out points causes horrible stutters in playback. Only crashed once, though. Motion crashes often.

June 16, 2005 at 8:30 pmOh yeah, can’t set my window layout the way I like it either. I have to separate my bins from my browser manually. Makes changing layouts impractical.
I’m downgrading after this job.
