Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Voiceover Tool

    Hi,

I’m trying to use FCP HD 4.5’s voiceover tool and have several issues:

    1. DV deck connected to mac through firewire does not pick up levels with mic. In voiceover tool, “source” is set to “DV audio”. I double checked “view>external video>off”.

    2. Same DV deck picks up levels when source is “built-in audio”, “internal microphone”, but levels are very low and sound like it was recorded at end of a can. Also, cannot choose 48khz sample rate, just 44.1khz.

    Questions:

    3. Why can’t “built-in audio” pick up 48khz sampling rate? Does 44.1khz sound played in 48khz timeline change voice pitch? The voice sounds a bit high.

    4. Suggestions for recording normal, clean sound for voiceover? Just doing it in my bedroom for now. I did it before on minidisc, converted 44khz to 48khz in Itunes, then imported in final cut and it sounded CLEAN.

    Thanks,
    Alexander

Get yourself a iMic (from https://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/) and a mixer or other device that will take the mic imput and send out a line input to the iMic which then can be used as a voice over input. I use a simple USB mic for this and it works great for voice over scratch tracks.

If your mic is plugged into your DV deck, you most likely need to have EE set on and/or the record button pressed to see any levels.

I was informed iMic would not record at 48Khz, nor the edirol UA-20, the cheapest interface for 48K is the M-Audio mobile Pre at around $150?

I have the same hassle using the vo tool.

FWIW FCP5 seems more capable of playing a 44K audio file in a DV (48K) project than 4.5 (without rendering).

A BIG plus for me video-wize is that I can now scale 16:9 footage in a 4:3 project in real time at full res. Never managed that in 4.5. Fantastic.

    (FYI I’m using a Dual G4 125 and OS 10.4)

“the iMic actually supports 48K sampling, which is extremely convenient for FCP’ers”

Fantastic – my computer supplier (JIGSAW, in the UK) who are usually very good seem to have given me bad advice in this case. I shall get back to them and order one up – as you say – very handy for the FCP VO tool.

    Thanks,

    Ken.
