Might try restriping the tape.
As a side note:
If you control the deck via RS-422 instead of Firewire it works a lot better. And you can stripe the tape remotely thru FCP’s black and code button in the ETT Window… all you need is the cable, and a Keyspan adapter for this… https://www.keyspan.com sells the USB to RS422 adapter, and I’m sure Promax can sell you both! https://www.promax.com

You’ve set the capture preset to “non controllable device” and still can’t get the audio to go into the computer? Might try a dub to a DV tape thru a camera… you’ll get TC that way that means something.

There’s a qualification process that Apple does with gear. It’s very involved, and it’s also up to the manufacturers of the products to send in a sample for Apple to qualify…
You can see the current list of these products (cameras, decks, IO gear etc…) if you click on the Tech Specs at Apple’s FCP product site… it’s a downloadable PDF… if you search Applecare on “Qualification”.. you’ll find lists that date back to earlier versoins of the software too. If your camera/deck or whatever isn’t on the list, asking around this forum helps make determinations on whether or not you should spend time trying to make it work etc… Because it still may even if it’s not on the qualified list of supported devices. Sony’s gear for example almost ALWAYS works… reason is they use the latest specs for deck or camera control at all times… AJA’s products usually work too, but when Apple does an update, sometimes there’s hitches, and AJA will have new drivers posted very fast… AJA and Apple have a wonderful relationship, and probably the best of the different manufacturers of I/O gear… IO was actually thought up by Apple, then when Pinnacle passed on the idea, AJA was all over it… tells you something about Apple’s connection now to AJA.

Ya know? It’s because technology is racing faster than ever before… I’ll bet that this isn’t going end any time soon either. But you are absolutely correct about checking out an update here at the COW or in specific forums (like CineWave’s or AJA’s for example) about updates before you run them.. always best to not be the first on your block as it were.

While we are on the subject… there’s nobody twisting your arm to upgrade. i.e. if you have a system that’s working, making money for you, and there’s no compelling need to upgrade, why do it? Shoot, Mac’s run a very long time, and there’s no reason to believe that you couldn’t get an FCP system which is stable and just stay there for YEARS…
Hey, I love FCP 5, and I adore my Kona cards… they always seem to work just fine…

Blackmagic, and Aurora also work well with FCP 5 ( AJA Kona 2 card is a rockin’ too)…. however CineWave development is on it’s way to extinction if it’s not already there… Probably should be setting up a CineWave system on Panther, and only update the OS to what was qualified to work with the last CineWave Driver (proably the last one that was ever and will be ever made). I’ll wager that FCP 5 will be out of the question here with a CineWave system…
Thew, I don’t think that your Laird was ever qualified by Apple to work with FCP… however the rest have been at one point or another..
That said, AJA products work and will always work with Apple products I suspect. Now that Avid owns Pinnacle…. figure CineWave is dead. It was overpriced for a long time, and is really the ultimate cause of it’s demise… 10K for a CineWave HD system, when Blackmagic, and AJA are selling similar cards for a quarter of the price or less? Com’on…

PCI graphics cards aren’t as fast as the AGP variety so I’d suggest you don’t do this. It’s sort of throwing good money after bad. You’d be MUCH better off selling the G4, and looking for a used G5 with an appropriate Graphics card in it.

The “damage” was done when you shot DV… you cannot improve it by putting it into an uncompressed sequence. In fact, theory states that you actually are losing some quality doing so… So for now, stay all DV… FCP 5 has the ability to improve render quality BTW over FCP HD… If you really want improvement, you need to shoot digibeta, DVCPRO50 or better in the first place. I really don’t think you’ll see any improvement putting DV into a higher qualtiy sequence…

One thing you can do is drag the double grey bars that separate the audio and video… i.e. they move up or down to reveal more of the video or audio. Usually, unless you have a ton of tracks, you can arrange the window so you can see all tracks that way.
