Not familiar with the Pannasonic deck, but some decks have a setting in their menus to have ff scan (or not) might look into that (got a manual for it?)

Whatever you are seeing in the 29.97 playback is most likely not due to capturing 24PA material as 29.97… (rather it’s something else) The only thing you’d gain by removing the pulldown is smaller files I’d think. The look of the motion should be the same.
That said, you’ll have to remove the pulldown in the source clips with Cinema tools or recapture it from tape removing the advanced pulldown pattern to work in a 23.98 sequence setting in any event. Can’t just put the 29.97 material in a 23.98 sequence…

A reinstall of Compressor from your install disk should fix you up…

Yeah, there is… Set the Duration of a still import in the user preferences to 1 frame. As long as the sequence is numbered correctly, you can import it’s containing folder, and then drag the folder to a sequence open in the timeline. I’d export this as a self contained QT movie, reimport that, and edit away…

Post which version of OS, FCP, QuickTime, and Compressor you are running EXACTLY. If you are running Tiger, how did you get there? i.e. did you do a clean install of it then install the studio?
I just did 120 minutes worth of HQ MPEGS from uncompressed and DV sources and it completed the job in about 4 hours on my dual 2 gig g5… so sounds to me like you have to reinstall some software somewhere or update or…
I’m running QT 7.0.1, OS 10.4.2, and FCP 5.0.2

I’ve not done a side by side between a 3k DV camera and that HDV camera so can’t comment on the difference, but would *guess it’s better on the HDV camera.
Yes, if you upconvert HDV to uncompressed HD, you’ll need the fast drives to handle the media files… Huge systems is selling a superfast set of 4 gig fibre channel arrays… Medea probably is as well, and of course you could use Apple’s arrays as well.

They are not supported with any cards that I know of. So to keep things in a situation where you could color correct in FCP, and then later recapture if need be with the same levels you captured with in the first place, use the bars from the source tapes, and setup your 1800 with a BVR-50 remote control (gives you the proc amp controls that will allow for this).

I usually wouldn’t advocate that you change any software if all works well (but then, there is this little issue you ARE having)… I think that updating QuickTime might be in order, but stay in version 6 and not 7… https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652formac.html It’s a dowload of the last version of QT 6… Probably worth a try.

Restart FCP with the camera/deck attached and powered on, or refresh devices from the bottom of the View menu.

Create a new sequence which is a standard 4:3 sequence. Then drag your 16:9 sequence from the Browser to it, and render, the resulting tape will be letterboxed.
