I think the ultimate solution for you is to notwork in HDV at all. Take the HDV files and capture them as DVCPRO100 clips and you’ll be miles ahead I’ll wager. If you don’t have the faciltiy to do this, use HDVxDV and get there that way. https://www.dvdxdv.com/products.html
HDV isn’t my favorite format… and your post only solidfies my feelings.

Pete, it’s time for a new Mac… Seems to me that this is something we all face about every 3 years or so. Surely by now that G4 has paid for itself, and is still worth selling on ebay. Buying upgraded CPU chips usually results in a minor speed bump at best, and the cost of these upgrades isn’t in line with the improvement most of the time, because there’s more to a computer’s speed than a CPU speed. Bus speeds come into play for example… It’s time dude, and if new doesn’t appeal, you can look for a used dual G5 and save some bucks… in the long run, you’ll be much better off with a G5, and will never get there with your current machine.

Might try exporting the speed changed clip as a self-contained QuickTime Movie, then exporting a tiff sequence of that file?

30p poses a problem for transfer to 24fps but it’s not overcommable with the right equipment involved (a Terranix box comes to mind).
I’d not change formats mid stream at all. Finish in the same formats. You’ll use a standard 29.97 timeline for the material.
24p material uses 23.98 fps-so sequence settings should be that for 24p material. Seems to me any digital projector can project your material without having to convert to 24 fps… it will be smoother looking too, more fps!

Well the “lots of layers” thing is probably whats causing the slowdown. You cannot export an EDL very fast at all with more than two video layers, and 8 audio tracks… it’s the the EDL technology getting in the way here, after all, it’s 17 years old… Using “odd” transitions can cause a headache or two too.
Why an EDL at all anyway? I’ll bet we can come up with a much better solution for the job you need to do. XML is one thing you can use, and if you need to do this often, a wonderful replacement for EDL’s is Automatic Duck… it translates FCP to Avid and vice versa as well as other NLE file formats etc… a lot richer than what can be done with EDL’s they are pretty primitive.

Yeah, there is. Exporting using QT conversion will ALWAYS recompress the video. (even not changing the format) Exporting using QT movie export will not unless you change the format of the video during the process, and you can also make a non self contained QT movie that will open in any QT compliant app as long as it’s on the same computer that actually houses the media.

Make sure that the sequence’s render settings are all set to high. Sort of sounds like you are rendering a lower quality, and when printing to video, FCP is rendering in a high quality…? If you perform an audio mixdown before you use the print to video or edit to tape command, you shouldn’t see even that render bar when you involk either of the commands.

Try getting the info again, and if there’s not a matching sequence setting to the clip’s properties, I’d be surprised. When you put it into a sequence that’s properly set up, you shouldn’t have to render as well.

It’s all in the manuals, however the tests will be based on what’s in the Certified Book. (a bunch fewer pages to study!)
