Sounds like it’s permissions need to be looked at. Select it on the desktop, but not open it… then type cmd+i to Get Info on it. Change the permissions to read and write, and you should be good to go. Make sure it’s formatted to be mac OS Extended. I don’t think it matters if it’s journalled or not.

Change the aspect ratio in the Motion Tab’s Distortion parameters to make them look right.

Since you know more about your own workflow, you probably should make the decision based on what you’ll need now and in the future as far as in and outs… That said, if you put the system on a single power strip… doesn’t matter how many devices you have to power down right? i.e. one switch on that strip does it all…
Also… the IO will be future proof, where the decklink probably won’t be. FW 400 isn’t going to go away anytime soon, but bus changes will and already are happening …

Most of the time, camera masters aren’t rewound on set, so they come to me near or at the end of the tape’s recording. I set an out point in the log and capture window there… rewind, and then set the in point. Log the clip, and batch capture it. It works like a charm… In order to use capture now, the tape must be rolling (so much of the time, you can’t get as much of the beginning as you can if you log the clip first). But I really find it best to log the tape first as described earler. If the tape is rewound, I’ll do just the opposite. Set the in point first, FF to the end, set out, log and batch.

There is some advantage I think: renders will be faster, and especially a down convert to SD MPEG would be a TON faster. Making SD MPEG files from HDV native is a really long render for sure.

Agree with you here Graeme, but of course this all requires a card, and a lot faster disk drives… Don’t you think that DVCPROHD would still be better than HDV? at least SOME improvement? seems to me that it would, but have to admit I’ve not tried this, just read posts about it.
A whle back I saw a demo of what you are proposing, and indeed it really did a fine job. But the system was comprised of a Kona 2, and an analog converter, and a set of FAST hard drives. SCSI 320 at the time I recall…

I think you’re on the right track… look at it this way: a single 1.8 G5 is about the same speed as dual 1.42 G4… a dual G5 just runs circles around any G4 (Twice as fast or more), and a Quad machine is nearly twice as fast as a dual…

Try trashing your FCP preferences file and give it another go… they would be in your user/library/preferences/fcp user data folder.

You should be OK as long as you are using the stock presets for DV sequence and capture (which is what you are describing). Not sure what is causing the error message, but if you don’t see a problem when placing the clips in a sequence, you don’t have one…

500 gigs isn’t much storage space unless you are really working in short short form… like TV spots… other than that your list is looking pretty good, except for the Kramer… don’t think you need it at all.
