  • Capturing full tape in HD without selecting out-point

I’m trying to capture a full Mini DV tape onto HD without having to rewind and forward the tape too much. How do I just set it up to capture the whole tape without forwarding to the out-point first and then it having to rewind itself back to the beginning? I have tried ‘capture now’ in the log and capture window but it just shows a blank batch capture screen saying ‘looking for timecode’ but nothing actually happens. I’ve also tried just selecting an inpoint but then it just captures only a few frames. Lastly, I have tried manually setting the in and out points in the browser window but that hasn’t helped either. Please could you put me on the right track! … Cheers,

It seems that you have wrong capture settings. In the log and capture window (command-8)- capture settings tab, you should choose dv pal (or ntsc), or maybe make your own capture preset in final cut-audio video settings.

Most of the time, camera masters aren’t rewound on set, so they come to me near or at the end of the tape’s recording. I set an out point in the log and capture window there… rewind, and then set the in point. Log the clip, and batch capture it. It works like a charm… In order to use capture now, the tape must be rolling (so much of the time, you can’t get as much of the beginning as you can if you log the clip first). But I really find it best to log the tape first as described earler. If the tape is rewound, I’ll do just the opposite. Set the in point first, FF to the end, set out, log and batch.

what type of camera/deck are you capturing from? do you see any image when you just play the media in the Log/Capture window and can you control your device with the transport controls in FCP? also, what message do you have in the device status area?

The “looking for timecode” message suggests you may need to select “non controllable device” in the capture settings tab under device control. If this is the case, you’ll need to manually start your tape, let it run a few seconds (the tape needs to come up to speed) then do a capture now.

Thanks everyone for responding… It seems that Sulka was spot-on and that I needed to select ‘non-controllable device’ from the Capture Settings tab to be able to perform ‘Capture Now’. Cheers and thanks again…

glad to help. Just remember to let your tape run for 5-6 seconds before doing capture now – this ensures the tape is playing at speed and helps to prevent sync slippage.
