Have a one hour show I want to consolidate using media manager, something that should be an common easy thing to do and this is the issue Im having. When I select the sequence in my browser and select media manager, it says building used media list and sits, and sits, and sits, then after 20 minutes it went up a whole 1% to 5%, so at this rate Ill get media manager open by the new year….not acceptable….anyone have any idea why this is taking so long. I am using a fiber channel solution, FCP 5.0.3 all updates current. This should be easy. Only thing I will say is that it is an hour show with a lot of layers….can FCP not deal with this…..anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

Well the “lots of layers” thing is probably whats causing the slowdown. You cannot export an EDL very fast at all with more than two video layers, and 8 audio tracks… it’s the the EDL technology getting in the way here, after all, it’s 17 years old… Using “odd” transitions can cause a headache or two too.

Why an EDL at all anyway? I’ll bet we can come up with a much better solution for the job you need to do. XML is one thing you can use, and if you need to do this often, a wonderful replacement for EDL’s is Automatic Duck… it translates FCP to Avid and vice versa as well as other NLE file formats etc… a lot richer than what can be done with EDL’s they are pretty primitive.

Except XML’s are prone to problems too…. ever since we installed an XSAN solution, XMLS sometimes work, sometimes come out garbled, and there’s no rhyhm or reason we can fathom.

Media Manger IS slow. Dupe your sequence, delete everything but V1, and see what kind of speed you get. But chances are it’s going to take as long as it takes…. I imagine it might speed up in sections and slow down in others. Media Manager, IMHO, is a broken piece of junk…. it REALLY REALLY REALLY needs some attention from the programmers, because all we have now is cheap workarounds.

I’m having a similar problem . . . when I try to batch capture I get a status that says “Building List of Unused Media . . . 5%” but it hangs up my system EVERY TIME. I’m using a G4 dual processor, FCP 4. Any ideas?
