Seems to me that what you are seeing when you stop the video playback are frames that are interlaced and contain two fields that are of different frames of the original film… which would be normal. It’s not on EVERY frame right?
I really don’t think you have a problem, but you could remove the redundant fields with Cinema tools or directly from the modify menu in FCP… removing the pulldown pattern and then working in 24fps is gonna make life nice in many ways as well. You can burn the DVD as a 24fps file and the DVD players out there will add back the pulldown. (that’s what those Hollywood films do you reference)

You can resize the movies in FCP, but I’ll bet they’ll look pretty soft… the way to do it is in the Scale parameter in the Motion tab.

Funny you should ask about the MXO. They JUST started shipping pre release units to the reviewers, I’ll have one shortly to write about it for the COW mag, but can’t test it with a MBP… have PB though to try it with so will report back about it.
It’s a much better solution if it lives up to what it’s specs say… Would allow for SD, HD you-have-it monitoring… and it should make the Cinema Display sing the correct tune.

What’s the source video? DV? then it should be PAL DV anamorphic, and it shouldn’t look squished in FCP at any rate…

I just copy and use the 44.1 files directly… don’t bother convert at all if I’m not going to use too many tracks of audio. The up conversion directly done in the timeline is just fine once you render these files, using the “item level” command. (and it’s fast too).

Might need to turn off the file limiting size in the Scratch disk settings. If it’s set to limit file size, longer captures will create these files.

FCP has to really be pushed to use much more CPU cycles… like rendering can do this, if you don’t see it slow down you don’t have a problem… Quite frankly, it won’t use what it doesn’t need (good thing too, that way you can render in another app at the same time).

If you’re anywhere near Washington DC… you can get footage from the National Archives for the cost of the dub…

Try repairing permissions, and check the status of the XRaid’s permissions again, might just reset them?
