The amount of RAM that any app will use will vary all the time. I’ll wager the better the code is written, the more it releases and grabs RAM as needed too.
It’s because different tasks will use different resources in your computer. Not everything needs RAM to make it happen faster per se… it needs CPU power or it needs GPU power or even drive speeds to make it all happen faster – though drive speed to a lesser extent. It just depends on the tasks you’ve just performed, are performing and attempting to perform at the same time etc… Like in FCP 7 some of the filters used your GPU, others didn’t at all, relying on your CPU. If you loaded more sequences in the timeline window, you’d use more RAM. RAM doesn’t speed up rendering in anyway though… because it’s just a bucket to hold data in, not a processing device. It’s not doing the number crunching, it’s just feeding data to the bus extremely fast, and useing more than needed won’t help speed things up.
But it always comes down to this: You can’t have too much RAM, CPU speed, GPU power, and Drive speed. The more you have of each, you’ll see improvement where that hardware comes into play performing the task that utilizes that resource.

What is the source material’s orginal format? H.264? or?
If you export a movie file that’s using ProRes as it’s codec (Share/Export Media…) – It’s likely your sequence is ProRes already) I’ll bet that file will work by just opening it in compressor and compressing it to h.264 independently of FCP.

Compressing a single file (exported as a self contained movie of your project from any app) will always encode faster than a reference movie file from any app. After all the computer only has to source ONE file, not tons o’ clips…
Also if you run Compressor stand alone it seems to me that it’s always been faster than sending from FCP. I think the reason revolves around the fact that Compressor and FCP have to talk to each other during the process when you’ve just sent from FCP to C, where if it’s running by itself, Compressor doesn’t need to do that so it’s just plain faster. Remember in 7, FCP got completely tied up if you sent to compressor…

How are you making the comparisons? Playing in QT vs playing in FCP on your computer or are you seeing this externally on a video monitor (only real way to judge things actually for delivery to TV) or?

Well, I didn’t watch all of this video, but the only “changed” color I see is to black and white. You can use several filters for this, but I’d just use the color corrector 3 way and lower the saturation to zero… Is there a specific area you could point out timewise that is something other than that you’re asking about?

You need to disable some of the system’s keyboard commands in order for those insert and overwrite buttons to work at all. It’s not a problem with the keyboard. Open your Mac’s system settings (found in the apple menu in the finder) and then click on the keyboard settings. Turn off all of the F keys to not be used by the system. Then the F keys in FCP will operate as advertised.

When you say the video isn’t scaled properly, I understand you’re talking about the PPT’s. But exacly what isn’t being scaled right? I mean do they scale differently than the standard video files do? They stretch oddly or get cropped or?

The only way to see the markers in a sequence as a list is to right click on the timeline window’s ruler to reveal them. Clips will have those disclosure triangles, but sequences never do in the browser.
Also AFAIK there is no way to copy sequence markers between sequences other than to just copy the whole sequence of course.

Well… any time you make an adjustment after you’ve set the first keyframe in a clip, new keyframes are added at the position of the playhead. So don’t adjust anything unless you are on a keyframe you’ve already set or you want to set one where the playhead sits. This is the built-in behavior of FCP’s filters, and there’s no setting to change to switch the behavior.
