The most you can actually add is one per frame.

Be sure your renders are being saved on the array …

Rendering the effects not rendered will improve playback, as will setting the quality of the playback behaviors in the RT pop up menu (Timeline window) , might try playing around with those.

Turn it off. There’s a button you can check on to turn off the warning. The only problem that dropped frames really cause is if you’re laying out to tape, and there are ways to make your final output play OK after the edit is done.

What format are you editing? ProRes? or?

Yeah, you’re possibly missing 3 things.

    1. Expandability. There’s no way to run an external monitor inexpensively (Io HD will work and they run 3k) without an express card slot.( Matrox MXO might work, but I’d check it out before I committed to a Mac of any ilk, as it uses the second monitor port to do it’s trick) There’s also only one FW bus in any Mac, so you can’t add another without the card slot. Firewire cameras and firewire drives really work a lot better on machines with two busses) AND you can’t add a USB 3 card, nor an eSATA card to anything you’re looking at, so you’ll always be constrained to slow external disk drives.

    2. Color won’t run on the 13″… so you lose a fabulous color application by buying one. It will open maybe, but the display is just too low a res to show the app properly)

    3. The only “lately” made MBP’s with a card slot are the 17″ machines.

So depending on what you want to use the Mac for, and what your acquisition and delivery mechanisms/formats are going to be, you might not want to buy less than a 17″ machine… a used one sells for not much more than it’s 15″ counterpart. Even the current 17″ has the express card slot.

H..264 is a delivery format. It’s what you can acquire it with DSLR’s. When Canon announced the first DSLR that shot HD video, they said it was designed for news photographers to be able to put the videos immediately on the web, have a video/still camera in one unit etc… not edit the stuff… Newspapers are in big trouble because of the Web as we all know, and their only defense to the Web is to join the movement… So Canon saw a ready market for the new DSLR’s… They didn’t see the video world coming at it.

Because not every frame is actually recorded int it’s entirety in an H.264 stream, it’s inefficient to edit it because the computer has to look through as many as 15 frames just to show you one, or render an effect frame by frame, or even put this video out to a tape. There are only 1 in 15 frames in an H.264 file that actually contain every bit of info about every pixel within the frame. (that’s why it’s a smaller file).

ProRes is an all i-frame format. Meaning the value of every pixel of every frame is actually in the recording. If you’re time is worth anything to you, you’ll find it renders and re-compresses a lot faster than any GOP structured media. Seems these days a lot of video is going to the web, and all those formats are GOP structured. When going from GOP source, to GOP delivery, the amount of number crunching the computer has to do is immense, and there are rounding errors in the algorithms involved no doubt. Very likely the reason that you had problems with it.

Further, ProRes is 10 bit video where what you shot is only 8 bit. So anything you add to a prores sequence will be 10 bits. (there’s 4 times as many colors possible in 10 bit over 8 bit.), and the color space is 4:2:2 or better, rather than 4:2:0 which is what you’ve shot. so any graphics, stills, animations will be of higher quality in the end.

THATs why avoiding GOP structured media is more efficient to do.

Try transcoding it to ProRes instead.

As long as the tape has timecode, what should happen is that your master clip will be back online, and connected to the clips you put in your sequence the way you intended. Hopefully maintaining sync.

Didn’t you say you had a “master clip” you cut down into smaller sections? If you used subclips of that master clip (the whole tape maybe?) then all you need to do is recapture that master clip once it’s disconnected from any media. Just select the offline master clip in the browser, right click, and select “batch capture”, then follow the prompts.

No you misunderstood the term” recapture”.. it means load the tapes in a machine, select the now offline clip, and recapture it from the tape.

Might be some sort of corruption in the project file… try creating a new project file, and select all from the original file’s browser and copy it. Paste it all in the new file and see if there’s improvement. There are no settings I know of that would change this particular behavior.
