Phil- You should be able to print to tape. Go to Audio/Video Settings A/V Devices. Make sure the box ‘Different Output for Edit/Print to Tape’ is NOT checked. When it starts the conforming process (HDV) you’ll know you are good to go.

Juan- Just a warning when making archive/long term storage decisions. It is a known fact that “DRIVES DIE!” Most of us have examples that we’d rather not talk about. I use Toast to back up onto $.10 DVD-R’s. It will even spread large archive files over multiple DVD-Rs.

Judy- First close out of FCP. In the deck menu turn the iLink downconvert to ON. Keep your SDI connection. Launch FCP. Set your SDI settings in Audio/Video settings. Now open Log and Capture. Set to firewire device control from the machine control tab inside ‘Log & Capture.’ It’s a workaround that works for us.

Luciana- Are you sure the camera is a Canon? Sony makes a Z1U. In regards to your question, if you have made NO changes to your timeline and you print to tape again it may be giving you an erroneous timeframe….. I suggest letting it go and you’ll find it only takes 10 or 20 minutes.

Nayim-Do you have a video card in your system? If so go video out to a $39 DVD recorder. In extended mode you can get 3 or 4 hours on each $.10 DVD-R. Charge’em for your time of course.

July 25, 2009 at 5:34 pm in reply to: HDV WORK FLOW with AJA Kona WHAT’S BEST?

Hey Todd- I believe the issues you are having come from machine control. We came up with a FCP workaround so we could digitize component with our Kona card from the Z-1 or M-10. We use firewire machine control.

It’s a bit convoluted but it works. You start at the deck menu and you need to turn iLink convert to ON. This is for machine control only. FCP’s Audio/Video settings will not let you choose this component/firewire workaround. For the workaround just launch Log and Capture and choose firewire machine control from the Capture Settings tab inside the Log and Capture window. Our best machine control was with DVC Pro (go figure). After you get everything working exactly the way you want it be sure to create a custom Easy Setup.

I believe this would fix your Create New Clip issue.

We learned early on with FCP it is best to bite the bullet and digitize and edit in the mastering codec. It looks like this would be the Pro Res 422 1080i codec in your case. The downside of this workflow would be that you couldn’t use your iMacs and older gear for digitizing.

Hey… digitize at night and edit in the day. Buy/rent another Mac Pro.

    I hope these ideas help.

  • Mathew- Did you follow the directions in the dialog box? First it goes through a ‘conforming’ process. This is where FCP is building the proper frame structure for HDV output. The camera has to be in VCR mode and connected via firewire while it is conforming. When it’s done you’ll get a dialog box saying to put the deck in record mode. Push play/record at the same time and let the tape record for 5 to 10 seconds THEN click the OK on the dialog box. There is a delay between the video on the computer screen (cinema screen) and the LCD on the deck.

With HDV you have to use Print to Video which requires doing ‘hard record’ without machine control.
