any advice would be much appreciated –
    background:
    hardware g4 apple
    Sony Z1 HDV camera
    software – osx 10.5
final cut pro – 6.0.5 version

    here is the problem:
I have an edit of 10mins and am trying to play it out of final cut pro back into the camera.
it was shot and captured in HDV
    edited in HDV
the audio/video setting i have in FCP are :
    sequence preset -HDV – 1080i50
    capture present – HDV
device control preset HDV- 1080i50 firewire basic
playback output video – (ONLY ABLE TO SELECT – ‘NONE’ OR DIGITAL CINEMA DESKTOP’

Camera settings: VCR HDV/DV : HDV
    i.link conv : off
    a/v -DV out: off

i have played around with the setting of both but the best i can do to get the picture out is down convert them to DV and they they appear squeezed with black boarders top and bottom – please can anybody confirm what the setting should be to play the HDV edit out onto the camera???
does the Tape i am playing onto have a bearing? it is a sony DV tape – not sure if this is the problem though as the camera and final cut do not recognize each other before we even get to pushing record on the tape.

You cannot play HDV back to tape. You have to use the print to video function. Is that what you’re doing? What exactly happens when you do it?

    All the best,

    hi Tom
i tried the print to video function –
the pictures rendered for 42 minutes – went to a black screen and a message appeared asking me to push ok – the progamme started to play on the screen – (although not full screen inside a black box three quarter screen size – although the camera did not record it.
the camera is plugged in via firewire –

Mathew- Did you follow the directions in the dialog box? First it goes through a ‘conforming’ process. This is where FCP is building the proper frame structure for HDV output. The camera has to be in VCR mode and connected via firewire while it is conforming. When it’s done you’ll get a dialog box saying to put the deck in record mode. Push play/record at the same time and let the tape record for 5 to 10 seconds THEN click the OK on the dialog box. There is a delay between the video on the computer screen (cinema screen) and the LCD on the deck.

With HDV you have to use Print to Video which requires doing ‘hard record’ without machine control.

    thank you
yes have made it work now
the crucial piece of information for me was don’t turn the camera off while it is rendering! i was saving the bat power because the render takes over an hour – but this was causing it not to work.
    thanks to both of you
    Matt
