  • FCP Print to Video – Time/Conforming Question!

Posted by Luciana Ferraz on August 7, 2009 at 12:23 pm

Hello! I have a 1 1/2 hour HDV footage which I’m trying to export to my Canon Z1U. I’m working with fcp and everything works out fine when I Print to Video. The problem is that I have to make 4 masters and it takes about 5 hours to conform video each time I have to produce a new master. Is there any way around it? I would imagine that when it gets conformed once it wouldn’t need to get conformed again taking the same 5 hours. BTW, every single clip and effect is already rendered in full quality. Help!!!

Luciana- Are you sure the camera is a Canon? Sony makes a Z1U. In regards to your question, if you have made NO changes to your timeline and you print to tape again it may be giving you an erroneous timeframe….. I suggest letting it go and you’ll find it only takes 10 or 20 minutes.

    Hi Jerry,

    Sorry, I meant Sony!

I have made no change and still really takes the full 5 hours each time I press Print to Video. Do you know if there’s any settings I should check/change?

    Thank you!

    Luciana,

You have discovered one of several issues with mastering HDV back to DV tape. In addition to the time it takes to conform, there is also an unnecessary compression step which can affect all text, graphics, and color corrections, which can get re-compressed yet again if that master is used for reediting or broadcast transmission at a later time.

For all of these reasons, most professionals do not master HDV back to DV tape and instead master to another format such as DVCProHD or HDCam. While these are also compressed formats, they don’t compress nearly as much as the re-compression with HDV.

    Hi David,

I was praying to have a miracle way around it. I’ll follow the pros and next time will master with DVCProHD or HDCam.

    Many thanks!
