Steve- Quit FCP>Launch Aja control panel>control>default video output>color bars. What do you see? Don’t leave the control panel until you see color bars. Then launch FCP and choose the proper video settings within FCP until you have a proper picture in your monitor. I’m getting off now as I hear the footsteps of Mr. Zelin.

Karel- As Jerry is suggesting use the component SD out of the camera. Go component into the Aja. If your system can’t handle the Prores codec then use 8-bit uncompressed or DVCPro50. I suggest you get all your settings correct on the camera output and the I/O (via the I/O control panel) first then launch FCP and choose the proper Easy Setup. You will be using firewire for machine control. This will give you clean SD I-frame video and not have to deal with the idiosyncrasies of editing HDV and it’s problematic mpeg2 GOP structure.

Pascal- You have a mismatch between your capture settings and your sequence settings. The red bar is in your sequence not your project. Go to your sequence settings and make the sequence settings match your clip settings.

Steve- I went to the Roxio website but am still a bit confused. Does Toast 9 also provide Blu-ray authoring? I know Walter has been using Encore for authoring and then burned with Toast 8.

If it does it would save going the whole Adobe Premiere route just to author Blu-Ray.

Ham- My recommendation is to make a folder on your primary (system) drive for FCP PROJECT files (not media/render files). They are small so back them up on a jump drive (especially after a long day of editing.)

Now, to relocate those huge (pesky) media files. First make sure you’ve quit the FCP application.

Now drag and drop all the capture scratch files that are still remaining on your system drive into the FCP capture scratch folder on your 1 TB scratch drive. Spot check the transferred media files with quicktime to make sure they transferred and play properly. If they’re OK drag the original media files you have copied from your system drive to the trash.

Launch the FCP projects that had the misplaced media. FCP will launch a dialog box telling you files are missing. Select the search button and the application will usually find the new copied files with the same name. And when it finds the first one and you say OK it should automatically connect the rest of the missing files for that project. Reconnect the media for each active project where you have relocated media.

Once all the media is connected and your project sequences and clips are playing properly SAVE and close out of FCP and empty your trash. You are done.

I use my secondary internal SATA drive for storing graphic/music files that I re-use a lot or for large graphic files from recent projects.

Erik- To get your machine control you need to open the log and capture window and select the Capture Settings tab and select your machine control there.

The normal Audio/Video settings won’t let you proceed.

Once you have have everything working right make an Easy Setup.

Chris- We’ve had that happen a few times and it usually can be tracked to a corrupt media file. The best way we found to track it down is set an out point a little before where we think the problem file is and export. If that exports successfully we do short exports using in/out points ’till we find the bad file and fix it. It sounds like you may a have corrupt media file about a third of the way down your timeline. I know it sounds tedious but we’ve usually found and solved the issue in less time than expected.
