  • Help with the best workflow of capturing HDV and downconverting to SD

Posted by Karel Hurych on March 29, 2008 at 9:40 am

I will shoot advertising with Canon XL H 1 and MINI35 Image Converter (P+S TECHNIK).
Camera setup is HDV 1080p, 25fr. Final master will be SD PAL 16:9 DIGI BETACAM.
What capture setup in FCP 6.0.2 and workflow will be the best for editing in FCP, grading in Color and down-converting to SD.Can I capture direct via firewire to pro-res?
How do the best software downconverting to SD PAL 16:9. I haven’t HD hardware like AJA or BM. I have onlz AJA Io.

    Thanks for suggestions

Use your Io to capture to ProRes. Edit… then use the Io again to transcode to SD… record that signal.

Take the analog outputs from the HDV device (component of course) to the Io. And it’s audio too. There is an D/A/A/D conversion that happens doing this, but I’ve not seen a problem with it… using a Sony Deck anyway.

Karel- As Jerry is suggesting use the component SD out of the camera. Go component into the Aja. If your system can’t handle the Prores codec then use 8-bit uncompressed or DVCPro50. I suggest you get all your settings correct on the camera output and the I/O (via the I/O control panel) first then launch FCP and choose the proper Easy Setup. You will be using firewire for machine control. This will give you clean SD I-frame video and not have to deal with the idiosyncrasies of editing HDV and it’s problematic mpeg2 GOP structure.

    Hope this helps.
