Why the multichannel Delta 44? That would be the thing that would alert me to some problems. Perhaps the io is having trouble syncing video with the audio when component is selected? i would try hooking up your audio directly into the io and see if that fixes anything…

Also, reinstalling firmware/drivers has fixed some weirdnesses with my io (full version not la). Maybe you might try and see what that does for you as well. Make sure you back up your custom preset before reinstalling any drivers.

And of course, make sure all of your cables are hooked up correctly, perhaps you have a bad bnc connection and no video is getting to the io at all.

Well, it still leaves the question of how you will master it to Beta SP? I would at least go with the io la so you can make your Beta master straight off the timeline in FCP without passing through the DSR45.

In my experience the footage doesn’t look any better when digitized over firewire /8 bit/10bit. But GRAPHICS look much better, so it depends on your project.

You can save yourself some money on the disk space. We use and have been very happy with our lacie drives. My personal machine runs a SATA RAID, and I have had great experience with it, even allowing me to edit 8-bit Uncompressed HD off of a 4 drive array. Sure, they don’t offer data parity, but we haven’t had any problems. Just make sure to back up your project files, and AE renders regularly. We keep a spare internal drive in our G5 for this purpose alone (the spare SATA drive will also actually play 8&10 bit SD media off of it no problem). If I were you I’d look into a 2-4 disk SATA Raid and a SATA Raid controller that will offer some parity and save you thousands. Then, I would take the ‘extra’ money you didn’t spend on the Xserve and upgrade your CPU to a G5 with some extra ram as you will notice more of a difference in editing performance, than you would buying an Xserve to edit dv25. Do you have a reseller in the canaries :). They might be able to help you as well. Feel free to ask anymore questions.

Hey alisa. I downloaded and watched your move on the map. I see no image stutter. What I did notice is that the audio is rendered out at 44.1 which might be choking FCP. EIther mixdown/render the audio or rerender the audio out at 48khz. You should also turn on the dropframe alert to see if in fact FCP is dropping frames. If it is turned off and FCP is dropping frames, then the image will appear to stutter. You can find it in the user preferences>General tab & make sure the ‘report dropped frames during playback’ is checked.

Let me know how that works out.

Your drives should be able to process the DVCPro HD material by the way.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the blackmagic easy setups use the *Apple* UC 10 bit codec. you will need to duplicate that capture preset, change the codec to blackmagic, and then make a new easy setup with your new capture preset.

If your FCP timeline settings match your AE render settings there should be no reason to rerender in FCP.

There’s two solutions:

You can rerender your clips in AE using your current setups, remebering to change the codec from bm 10 bit to Apple uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 or
you can try and switch your timeline codec to BM 10 bit so it’ll “match” your AE renders. Hit command 0 in FCP and switch the codec in the quicktime video options.

Exporting is just like Peter says. Make sure the Self contained box is empty. This option is just like doing a reference movie out of Media100. As a former (and sometimes current) M100 editor, I feel your frustration. Once you figure it out and get the setup workflow down, FCPs interface will set you free from Media100 timeline constraints.

I was aware they had 1080i down conversion, but not 720p24.

I think Decklink Hd Pro also does the down conversion in hardware (as does Kona 2). It’s on the “cheaper” decklink cards that the down conversion is done in software.

This feature is good to know if you will be working with 720 footage and need to down convert. K2 has BMD “beat” in that regard.

Thanks for pointing this out, David and I’ll clarify for the record:

what I meant was that there is no automatic deck control for recording on to the 1200A using HD-SDI and RS 422. You can ingest very nicely with a 1200A, but “good ol’ serial deck” recording is unavailable. Have you tried it? Whoops, I’ll be happy to tell you it’ll drive you bonkers. It’s not an edit deck. Ask Panasonic, they’ll tell ya…after you buy it of course.

Sure H.264 looks like it’ll be good, The demo I saw of WMV looked fantastic on a consumer HD plasma monitor playing out of a laptop. Quite amazing in fact considering the amount of compression and small file size, but that’s on a plasma display. It’s going to be awesome for client reviews.

None of the staging companies I work for are building their packages around digital playback quite yet. Most of them have QBit, but the technology is not there yet. In order to use the QBit drive system, you need two of them. One configured of HD one for SD. You can get a whole array of SD and HD playback & the proper record decks (usually still in SD) for the cost of those two QBits, don’t forget for those two you also need a live back up of each, so in reality you are paying for four. I recognize that I am definitely in a minority in terms of media delivery and where my work is shown, but it’s my bread and butter and I have to voice my opinions & concerns because I know Panasonic wants my business, even though I am not a feature film maker.

When you put that WMV DVD through a 16K lumen projector and on the big screen in front of 500-1200 people, I guarantee you’ll see every artifact that Microsoft wrote in the WMV HD code.

I am curious to see what Panasonic offers to master in 1080 24p that’s in the price range of the 200.
