Iwas surprised to see Mr. Emery’s post. AJA released the new control panels for the I/O and the Kona 2. You can now take SDI material, and instantly upconvert it into the HD timeline,
using the Kona 2 control panel. This is HUGE and was a huge AVID selling point for Adrealine HD. This is A FREE DOWNLOAD for Kona users.

What makesthe new I/O control panel amazing is that if you have a standard Beta machine (or VHS machine),and need to get this into the HD timeline, you let the new I/O control panel act as a stand along converter, and convert the CAVsignal to SDI,and take that SDI signal and send it into the Kona 2, let it upconvert, and you have INSTANT conversion of Beta material into the HD timeline. If this is not huge, I don’t know what is. And what is more – ITS FREE- there is no upgrade charge.

Perhaps Mr. Emery wants realtime HD 1080i uncompressed with multiple streams to work – well, not yet – not this year. But these inovations are fantastic, and great news for AJA owners, becase they are FREE.

    Bob,

If I understand you correctly, the AJA IO is now going to be a direct competitor to the Decklink Multibridge? Both are now standalone convertors controlled by a software control panel. Your example of up and down converting analog SD material to and from HD is exactly the reason we had ordered a Multibridge months ago. As you know the Multibridge isn’t shipping as of yet because of more chip production problems. Have you heard when this software update for the IO may be released?

    Thanks!

The beta is up on the site now, which means you can get it now.

    The control panel is here:

The new firmware that is needed is here:

    https://www.aja.com/ajashare/IoFirmwareUpdate22-27.app.sit

make sure you read the release notes to tell you the caveats of the beta software. Find those here:

    Enjoy.

One reason for there not being more announcements from AJA this year is because of all the unexpected the delays that happened with the Kona cards and the Io updates last year. They are being much more cautious about announcing anything that is not ready (or very close) to shipping. That being said, they did announce some very solid new features and products. They have also been working very closely with Apple to insure that the Kona cards and the Io work with FCP 5, Quicktime 7 and Tiger.

I want to add a couple of things from the show floor, the other “little announcement” was the release of the Kona TV app. This Free Download is absolutely amazing. IT allows you to drop a QT Ref file or Movie on it and it plays the content out to tape — anything with a NATIVE QT codec….

that means that Animation codec output files can be printed to tape without rendering, from Motion, AE, LT, combustion, etc…<<<< ( I have not had a chance to try pixlet yet)

WIth FCP5 the K2 scaling engine will allow for playout to tape without requiring renders when using HDV content.

When Using Soundtrack Pro- you do not have to render a compressed preview, the K2 fully supports Full Rez Video and Audio with sync sound via the board’s AES/EBU so everyone with a K2 gets Pro tools like functionality out of the box.

I did not see this as the biggest NAB in AJA’s history, but considering that everything announced was shipping
before the show we did not have do deal in “vapor ware”.

I also did not see anyone mention that every single output in both Apple booths were using Kona2 cards. No Other company was represented, and that says a lot.
