  • I don’t think so. The Onyx board is an analog mixing console that has digital (firewire) capabilities. It basically acts as a MOTU board with analog mixing built in. The MCU is more of a MIDI like control surface, basically taking the controls of the software out of your your computer and putting it at your finger tips instead of using mouse clicks. Eventually as everything in the world becomes digital (including our brains), I imagine, all control surfaces will behave in a similar way.

    Hope this helps.

  • [Bryce Whiteside] “This is not a mixer, but a control surface and supposedly it uses the Mackie protocol. The post below might be worth a read”

Isn’t that what you are asking for Brian? You don’t really You edit dv (no mixer needed there), you just want a control surface to operate FCPs software audio board, right?

  • I don’t think it’s the Onyx that Mr Video is referring to, I think he is referring to the MCU from system from Mackie. Read here:

I’ll add in 10 bucks to double it. $20 anyone? Has to be HD-SDI in and RS-422 deck control. I know it can do the weird firewire 7 frame preroll edit.

    Comp size = 1280×720, frame rate = 23.98, timecode base – 24fps, codec = DVCPR0 HD 720p60

Field rendering off. You can choose to render out at 1280, or if you really want to, you can use the stretch feature in the output module and change 1280 to 960. It’ll work either way.

Is that with 1394 in, or HD-SDI in?

Did you get this to work, Bob? I have not with RS-422 control, only firewire control. A quote from Pg. 13 of the 1200a operating instructions talking about the RS-422 interface:

“The connector satisfies the RS-422A interface standard, but no editing-related functions are operational.”

How do you get it to work Walter? Do tell.

  • What would be nice is a true offline/online process as elegant as Media100s. M100 still has the best hardware I have ever worked with, I just wish they made it for use with FCP. At least give us the opportunity of have an offline version of the uncompressed codec that plays nicely with the uncompressed codec on the same timeline. That would be tremendous.

I imagine once hardware manufactures get their HD feature sets completely up and running, we will start to see a little more tinkering with mixed formats in the same timeline. Just a hunch.

  • Where are you playing this file? In the Viewer, or is it playing through the timeline?

If you put this clip in the timeline it should play through, conversely if you watch it in the viewer it will fall short a frame due to the nature of how FCP handles it’s out points. That seems to be my experience anyway.

Presumably, if you can get access to the video signal and the time code that is running somewhere in the studio of the RS-422, you can log in FCP (through the io) and capture later with the tape that is running in the studio. Would that fit your workflow? Not exactly direct to disk, but then all you have to do is feed tapes and capture the logged clips which requires minimal effort.

What kind of studio camera are you trying to capture from, and where does the SDI signal run to/from currently? I need help visualizing your setup. What resolution are you, or do you want to, capture to?
