That depends on what kind of quicktime movie you want to compress. I would edit your program in full resolution, then export your movie to dedicated compression software (like cleaner or sorensen squeeze, where you can then deinterlace and correct the aspect ratio (square vs non square pixels) and then the movie will be suitable for viewing on a computer monitor. the movie will then be small enough (depending on compression) to email, or stream on the web.
If you want a ‘no fields’ DVD, you can take your export your finished movie into After Effects, interpret the footage as having no fields, render out a new movie as having no fields and then you should be all set.
Do you expect people to watch this DVD on their computers and not television sets?

Yes, it can, but dv still looks like dv. When dv is blown up (resized) it still looks like dv. When you up convert it, it’s very noisy. That’s at least what I found on my tests with the K2. I will be running DV50 tests shortly.

What do you plan to do with your fcp? Do you edit uncompressed HD, SD, DV? What are you looking for and what systems are you comparing to FCP?

i don’t know the answer to that one, but it happens to me a lot. I am speculating it has something to do with either the easy setups, or the way that final cut is reading the signal from the io when the io is switching inputs. Maybe the when the io reroutes the internal inputs fcp senses that there’s no video input and switches the setting to off. Apple-f12 is the keyboard shortcut to get you back to view all frames. Perhaps, some sort of update from apple (whether it’s an io driver update or fcp5) will fix this.

For what it’s worth, I have pulled a couple of keys off of varicam tape (not uncompressed) and have been very pleased with the results. I was even able to use Final Cut’s keyer on one of the jobs ( we had to move very fast and after effects rendering would have taken too long). Granted, this was not for broadcast, but for a large corporate presentation projected on a 40 foot widescreen. Closest thing to the movies as I’ll probably ever get. The results were very favorable. i was able to achieve an even better and smoother key in after effects using keylight, the keying plug in that is shipped with after effects. This process took a little longer than using FCPs keyer. While Graeme is correct, an uncompressed signal coming straight out of the cam is ‘better’, with the right amount of patience you should be able to pull a nice chromakey. Just so you know, we shot on green. I imagine the results of the HVX200 should be the same since it’s recording the same codec as the varicam. make sure you bring a waveform with you onsite to make sure your screen is lit evenly and properly (not too bright or dim). This will save you a lot of time in post.

If yo have a G5, get yourself a Kona2 and bring the HD-SDI in to do a realtime down conversion to SD or DV or whatever you want. then all you have to do is set your settings up for HD, redigitize, and you are ready for your online.

Another hint is while the clip is playing and you want to time out some cut points you can hit control -v (while the clip is still playing) and it will insert markers wherever you hit control-v. When you hit the space bar to stop, the clip will then divide wherever the markers were set.

haven’t tried an hour 15 minute capture with Kona2, but I’ve gone upwards of 45 minutes no problem.

I’m not sure what kind of “template” you want for your menu, but this thing has menu templates built in. Also, through the use of a windows pc, allows you to customize those templates. You can record straight to DVD, or to disk (built in), or to both.

Don’t get me wrong… I am not talking smack about Behringer, they have nicely priced products. I am just saying that the Behringer control surface hasn’t been officially announced for Final Cut is all. The Mackie has. It would suck to buy something for $200 and then turn out it’s unusable. I like to buy gear right the first time. Just sending out a friendly ‘buyer beware’.
My Nokia has bluetooth (Behringer with MCU), isync (FCP) supports bluetooth (MCU), but isync (FCP) does not work my model nokia (Behringer). That’s the simplest terms I can use at the moment.
As far as speaker recommendations for you Brian, get something that’s powered and that you can afford. These look to be okay:

I would highly recommend monitoring out of your Dv deck with some speakers like this though:

These speakers sound great and have multiple analog inputs (XLR, balanced 1/4″ (TRS), or RCA). These would migrate to higher demand FCP workflow in case you ever step out of DV.

Well, I would be wary of the beringer. Even though they say they support the Mackie protocol, who knows if it really works with FCP. If you can call Beringer to confirm it’ll work with FCP5, I’d say go for it.
As far as speakers go, what are you going to monitor through? Do you have a dv deck, or are you monitoring straight out of the back of your ‘puter? Just fishing if you want to get some nice computer monitors or some regular nearfield personal audio monitors.
