Posted by Aja Sales department on April 12, 2005 at 7:27 pm

We are extremely excited to announce that the new KONA 2 v1.1 driver software is released! This is recommended for all KONA 2 users, and is ready for immediate download at our website:

    https://www.aja.com/ajashare/Kona2_Software_1.1.sit

This is a major release, and includes many powerful and unique features that fully exploit the awesome capabilities of the KONA 2!

    In This Release

    – High quality 10-bit hardware upconverters can now be used to convert Standard Definition video to High Definition video on capture and playback. The upconverters can be used seamlessly with the existing down converters to provide complete capture-todisk-to-playback workflows.

    – Dual Link 10-bit RGB capture and playback. KONA 2 can now capture and playback full-bandwidth 10-bit 4:4:4 RGB video from/to equipment with Dual Link capability. New AJA QuickTime codecs allow you to use and create 10-bit RGB clips in any QuickTime application.

    – New VideoOut

THis is perfect timing as I am starting pre pro on a project that is to be shot in HD, but will be using already existing SD footage. I can’t wait to see how this hardware upconverter works. Thanks for the hard work AJA. Keep it up.

The upconverter is pretty slick. I was playing with some DigiBeta footage a little while ago and that’s a great addition to the Kona 2 lineup. Excellent work over there guys!

[Peter McAuley] “Is Q rez implimented in this release?”

    NO

But the additional add on to do DPX files is a very big deal for the film community.

Did I heard it right there is also 10-bit log RGB codec in this release? Can I use Gamma control to map 10-bit log RGB to linear for viewing on a video monitor?

Can anyone tell me why only the 601 color space seems to look right with HD footage. We have worked with HD footage in Final Cut, using 709 color space for a year, monitoring on Ecinema EDP 121 units. We view our images in 709 color space and if we select 601 color space, there is a slight change in the color. In the Kona control, selecting anything but 601 (even when working with HD footage) with 2.2gamma looks overly contrasted (crushed blacks) and very odd color. I question whether they have actually figured out color space accurately, given all the gamma display problems with these cards to date.

Back to my Decklink HD card again, just to be safe.

Correct there is both a 10bit RGB and a 10bit Log RGB for film out codec available.

with a separate application available as a free Download you can also now handle DPX files in and out of the
    kona 2.

    Gary,

We have been doing DPX files for awhile now using AJA hardware and I will add the word amazing to everyones list! Good hardware makes things simple!

We work the opposite. We capture as DPX and then have a tool to wrap as a Quicktime…..

    Cheers,
    Ramona
