Erik – I’m sorry for your frustration buddy. You shouldn’t let these things bother you that much. You should be happy that Apple has given you an opportunity at a career. You have to either accept the way they do business or look elsewhere. Also, there are still ‘older g5’s” available brand new from the apple store and elsewhere. Click on the “need pci-x?” link in the apple store and look at places like cdw or macmall to have stock of “older” g5s, which in my opinion are still kick ass computers. My dual 2.0 hums right along.

That hack you speak of probably broke some sort of user license agreement, every software vendor makes you sign one when you click agree. You do read those don’t you? If someone hacked into After Effects and posted all over the internet I’m sure there’d be more than a few lawyers called. To use your analogy, heavily modifying a brand new Chevy or Honda I’m sure violates the warranty. It’s corporations man, it’s how they work, how they operate, how they make money, and also how they protect their investments. To really step out of reality, if Apple (or anyone) sold the future proof computer, they’d soon be out of business as everyone would have exactly what they needed for the rest of their born days. SOunds silly, right? Although, I’d love for that to happen, you know it’s not. that’s like saying you are going to charge your clients for one video that you make and the rest are f-r-e-e. Progress ain’t cheap.

Apple is in a unique position as they write the operating system that controls their other software/hardware, unlike Adobe or Maya, or whoever which writes software to plug into the mac or pc architecture and operating systems. You better believe that if Maya or Adboe started writing the operating system, certain functions would not be available unless you upgraded to AE version 7.

So, on this beautiful Friday (at least here in Chicago), take a breath, send back the dual core, get yourself a dual processor 2.7, take a drink, do yoga, decompress, or simply pay the $700 to be up to date.

I was saying the SDX 900 purely from a look and cost advantage, rather than a practical travel around the world view. As far as the 200 and 100B being around the corner, they are not here yet. You have to buy what is here now so you can shoot now.

Forgive me, maybe I wasn’t clear in my previous posts, but it is my understanding that you want to convert your analog SD sources to digital (SDI) for subsequent upcoversion to HD. The io will do this conversion for you. The alternative is to buy a myriad of boxes, converters, and cables.

The Kona 2 has only HD & SD SDI (digital) inputs, there are no analog inputs on the Kona 2, The Kona 2 has only an analog video output and unbalanced analog audio output but only if you get the kbox.

This is how I look at it, and no I am not outraged. First of all, Apple is business to make money. Business, unfortunately, breeds competition inherently. Apple needs to stay competitive with other computer and hardware manufacturers if they want to keep selling computers and have people like us buy them. In some ways they keep us in check with Final Cut Pro where they ‘force’ you to upgrade to studio due to current graphics card architectures. In order for progress, you must take some steps, and I think that’s what Apple is doing. There are so many rants on this and other forums about FCPs ‘real time’ ability especially with uncompressed HD and color correcting. Apple is moving towards making the editing process faster and more powerful with the current architecture upgrades. Any other NLE or compositing applications, you have to buy into their hardware scheme as well, usually along with a yearly tech support fee as well. Apple has this kind of thing going with us, except we need to buy their latest hardware to stay current, at a fraction of the price of other NLE’s (remember you have to buy a computer with those too on top whatever charges for proprietary hardware) and there’s no support contract to deal with either. We also have the privilege of using the latest greatest technology, while other NLE’s require you to stay on certain “qualified systems” and os versions. If you want to stay current (and no one says you have to) you have to buy in to Apple’s way of doing business. They are moving forward and progressing, it costs money for them to do this, which is why they charge us for their computers and don’t give them away for free. You can choose to not buy in to this way of business, but they are doing the same thing as many many other NLE companies are doing. Apple’s way is still cheaper. Call a resaler and ask for a demo on other NLE apps and configurations, you’ll find out for yourself real quick.

Hmm, curious. When you say you selected all files, what do you mean? you can only load one movie at a time in MPEG Streamclip. You can then send it out to batch though for batch processing by opening the batch window and choosing “send to batch”

the timecode breaks thing is normal. That can happen and I haven’t had a problem with that either.

you should turn your quality up to 100% on the dv footage and definitely use 48k audio.
