This is from an earlier post I made to Bob Flood. Please note the bold it has updated information.
If you want to use your NTSC (or PAL, please substitute Pal for NTSC in this post) monitor as an extended desktop, you download and install the kona control panel and click on the control tab. Set the default Kona output to Macintosh desktop. Then, click on the format tab and set your primary video format to 525i29.97 (or 625,etc). Click on the analog video out tab and make sure that the primary radio button is checked. Also, make sure that the analog component output of your Kona is connected the the analog input of your NTSC monitor.
Now go to the apple display preferences and open them. There’s a tick box that shows “Show displays in menu bar”, make sure that is on. Now, there’s a little icon in the main OSX menu bar that looks like an apple display. It should be up on the right side next to the clock. Click it and you should see list of displays and their corresponding resolutions, scroll down to the one that says “display” and choose 720×486 or 720×576. Now you should see a picture on your NTSC/PAL monitor. If all you have is HD resolutions available, keep scrolling down in the apple display preferences to a menu called “number of recent items” and check the number ten. Now, you should have a list of NTSC/PAL and some HD resolutions. If you want to preview your photoshop you must drag the window over to your NTSC/PAL monitor. Make sure you hit the arrangement tab in the display system preferences, as your extended desktop will now be situated in the middle of your two computer monitors (if in fact you have two computer monitors). You can then drag your extended desktop to whatever side you need it to be on.

It really comes down to how much money are you willing to throw down?
To protect yourself from this in the future, you should look in to a Raid3 or RAID 5 fibre channel array that has built in redundancy even if a drive fails.
I have a Huge 4105 that I won’t leave home without, but it sounds like you need more storage than my feeble 1.25TB. You might want to look into the 4110 or the 4210. They are available in configurations up to 4 (4,000 Gigs).
You could also look into SATA RAIDs which will save you some dough, but you won’t get the hardware backup.
THere are people who also use Medea and have great success with their fibre raids.

Sounds like you have a settings mismatch. If you video out is set to 720p 59.94 (which is HD) and you are trying to view a 720×486 (which is SD)image out of final cut. Choose the proper easy set up in FCP for whatever media you are working with. If in fact, you are working with 720p59.94 media, then hit control-q in FCP and select aja Kona 2 720p59.94 and whatever codec you are using. If you then want to downconvert that signal, open the control panel and set you secondary output to 720×486. Then, you need to select the analog component output (or SDI output if you are monitoring SDI) and set the output to secondary 720×486. This is all really basic setup and please consult your FCP and aja manuals. They will tell you all you need to know.

FCP 4.5 ran best on Panther (10.3.8) and quicktime 6.5.2. It doesn’t seem to work really well with QT7/tiger. I would recommend upgrading to FCP5, or downgrading your OS/ quicktime.
It’s a lot of work and will cost you some money, but it’s well worth the effort and price whichever way you choose to go. FCP5 would be the easiest as all you would have to do at that point is completely uninstall FCP 4.5 (search apple.com/support on how to do so) and go with new install of FCP5.

It looks like you are running Tiger, QT7, and fcp 4.5. This setup can be wrought with issues. Also, when you upgraded to Tiger, did you do a clean install, or an upgrade and install? Perhaps (since you have a 2.7) your machine already came with Tiger preinstalled.
One thing to try is to delete your render files, rerender, and see if that clears up the issue. The 2x400GB SATAs you mentioned, are those in a RAID, or is one a system disk and one a storage disk? Do you have anything else connected to your firewire port besides the DSR-11?
