We are using FCP 4.5 on a G5. We’ve got about 3000 gigs of media. so far we’ve been using La Cie external firewire hard drives. (Four 500gigs and one 1000 gig.) We’ve already had one drive die on us, a few months back, and today one of our 500 gig drives won’t mount. We are looking into getting either a network or more drives to back everything up onto because if this were to happen again at a crucial time it could be a disaster. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Lacie are terrible. We’ve had 2 of their 500Gig drives die on us – and others in this forum have also had problems with them. G-Raid makes a great product in firewire land…

But with the amount of data you seem to have, it might be worth looking into a Xsan/Xraid formatted with RAID-5 protection. Or perhaps a Huge Media Vault RAID setup.

You can buy a FW enclosure with a lot of cheap drives as backup.

It really comes down to how much money are you willing to throw down?

To protect yourself from this in the future, you should look in to a Raid3 or RAID 5 fibre channel array that has built in redundancy even if a drive fails.

I have a Huge 4105 that I won’t leave home without, but it sounds like you need more storage than my feeble 1.25TB. You might want to look into the 4110 or the 4210. They are available in configurations up to 4 (4,000 Gigs).

You could also look into SATA RAIDs which will save you some dough, but you won’t get the hardware backup.

THere are people who also use Medea and have great success with their fibre raids.

B&H seems to have some GRAIDs in stock:

    Good luck,
