Video on LHe output is fuzzy/blurry

Are you using a Sony PVM-20L5/1, a Sony PVM – 20M4U, a Sony PVM-20M2U,
a Sony 1954Q, a Sony BVM series monitor, an old Ikegami monitor, or a consumer TV set. How are you monitoring your signal ?

Also, you are not clear as to what you are exactly what you are looking at.
Are you looking at the FCP output, or are you dragging a Photoshop image onto
to Kona output, etc. ?

The Kona output is a sharp as a tack (there is nothing on the market that makes a better picture, so I am questioning what you are looking at).

Sounds like you have a settings mismatch. If you video out is set to 720p 59.94 (which is HD) and you are trying to view a 720×486 (which is SD)image out of final cut. Choose the proper easy set up in FCP for whatever media you are working with. If in fact, you are working with 720p59.94 media, then hit control-q in FCP and select aja Kona 2 720p59.94 and whatever codec you are using. If you then want to downconvert that signal, open the control panel and set you secondary output to 720×486. Then, you need to select the analog component output (or SDI output if you are monitoring SDI) and set the output to secondary 720×486. This is all really basic setup and please consult your FCP and aja manuals. They will tell you all you need to know.

Also check the monitor loop for correct termination. If you switch to a HD image you will see ghosting if you have the KONA OP looped. Try this if you are looped. When you are in HD with KONA remove the Y cable that is looping and you will see that the ghosting disapears. It took me a while to figure out that it is a HD termination issue.

I am using a Samsung LN-R238W monitor with Y/Pr/Pb – a consumer TV. Signals are coming from the component out of the Kona box going to the component input of the Samsung. I am looking at the FCP out, using view all frames; using either AJA Kona 525i29.97 10 bit (720×486) as well as the AJA Kona 525i29.97 8 bit (720×486). Could this be a signal mismatch? Again, appreciate your help.

Hi –
the resolution of this monitor is 1366×768. Go to the Kona Control panel, and switch the output to HD (1080i or 720p) and bring up HD Bars – it should be sharp as a tack.

This is what I bet will happen- you will look at HD bars, and they will look great, and then you will switch back to 525 in the Control panel, and you will say “hey, the SD signal looks soft and crappy”.

WELL GUESS WHAT – Standard Def signals look like CRAP on ALL LCD monitors !!!
This is every damn monitor on the market. There is no mismatch – you will not find a good LCD monitor for standard def signals – period. Want a good picture – get a used Sony PVM-20L5/1 CRT monitor.
