It shouldn’t be that bad, Bob. 4 frames, although you feel the lag, is not terrible. Maybe you have some other issues with your system. Do you have any other firewire devices hooked up to your machine?

    Horita BSG-50, that’s right, BSG-50.

This sounds like the problem when viewing firewire out of FCP into a 1200A and i bet the same principals apply here.

There’s something in the 1200A manual that mentions viewing material when firewire is the input. It has a funny way of saying it like, the picture is “disturbed in the vertical direction”. I can’t remember what page it’s on, but this used to come up a lot when people thought that a firewire cable and a 1200A was all they needed to monitor HD out FCP. I could probably look it up if you need the reference.

Well, too ad yet another variable, they could already be letterboxed. If your footage is letterboxed, than the normal 720×486 rezz will work. If you are going to be working with anamorphic footage, then your illustrator should create at 864×486 and then squeeze the footage down to 720×486, this making it anamorphic.

    Make sense?

    Mortimer:

We had this discussion few days ago about a black-burst generator to get rid of the roll.

    Get yourself a Horita BSG-50 that’s right a BSG-50.

You might want to think about a new/used Sony professional monitor as well.

Huge Systems 4105, 4110, or 4210. Whatever’s in your budget. Couple this with a atto FC-41XS or 42XS, you’ll be farting through silk as my mom always says.

People also have luck with Medea fibre raids.

And what is the problem that you face? You like the black, you don’t like the black?

8 bit uncompressed is 720×486, MPEG-2 for DVD is 720×480. That’s the black you see.

There’s an inherent delay in a firewire based capture device. AJA has cut this down to 4 frames. You need to go into the File > System Settings and then hit the playback control tab and change the frame offset to 4. This way your timeline, canvas, and external monitor should line up. You will not be able to get rid of the 4 frame delay between you trying to edit to music or cut on your timeline. You will get used to the delay.

There should be a special term coined for this delay, but there ain’t.

    Ain’t, ain’t a word.

PS I hate to say this, but the aja manual should be your friend. A lot of the things you are discovering are explained there.

    Deadhead:

What kind of stuff do you usually edit? I’d like to help you. Questions like these often stir up the monkey cage and some of them bite. Don’t take it personally.

Feature sets can be misleading and can often put stars in your eyes. You pointed out that you have a wonderful 20L5 monitor, but were worried about maybe monitroing with an lcd one day…in the future. Since the 20L5 works now, why not use it now? If you want LCD monitoring…in the future, why not buy aja’s SDI to DVI converter when you need it? Do you need all of those audio channels in and out? Really? What format or formats do you work with regularly? Do you need upconversion or down conversion? What kind of analog gear do you have? What’s your typical workflow?

One big advantage, Kona 3 is shipping now and just waiting for you to snap it up.
