any reason why this would be so? whether i capture from my Beta deck in either the native DV-NTSC codec or the Blackmagic NTSC-DV codec, the results are the same. maybe i should be posting this to the Blackmagic forum?

thanks for helping out a bonehead,

Looking at all of this on an external NTSC monitor? Or judging with your computer monitors?

NEVER judge with your computer monitors. They do not show a true representation of the image.

NTSC monitor (Commodore 1084s), where the tape itself looks great (and no horizontal roll!) when playing from the deck, but upon playback from the timeline, it is dark and rolls.

And how is that connected to the computer?

    Mortimer:

We had this discussion few days ago about a black-burst generator to get rid of the roll.

    Get yourself a Horita BSG-50 that’s right a BSG-50.

You might want to think about a new/used Sony professional monitor as well.

It sounds like you have the IRE set up wrong on the black magic card. I’m not too familiar with the BM but with AJA they have a software control panel where you can swith the analog inputs from 0 IRE to 7.5 IRE. I would assume Black Magic has something similar.
