Is there a reason you’d go from 720 to DV (first) and then to iPhone (second?)

Compressor does a decent job of downconverting (with it’s defaults – upconversion is a different deal); as you downconvert, deinterlacing gets handled well. You shouldn’t worry about field order – compressor does it right in this case.

I’d use the Apple DVD, iPhone and Youtube presets.

Are they perfect? Maybe, maybe not. But why not try them first with 30-60 sec of your footage to see what you think.

In the bottom right of STP is a pane called ‘search’

Make sure that sound effects are chosen on the drop down.

Then search for: typewriter, Whoo (which will bring up a bunch of clips named Whoosh)….

and just explore the library.

No pref that I know of: rather, I’m guessing that Apple is trying to guarantee it doesn’t need to bug you with a “rename, replace” dialog box.

Given how much footage, I’m not sure I’d convert everything. It’s a question of time/resources

I’d definitely convert the following to ProRes:
HDSLR H.264 / 30 fps
Apple HDV 1080i60 / 29.97 fps
H.263 352×288 / 15 fps (Pen Cam)
MP4 720×480 / 23.98 & 29.97 fps (Pen Cam)

I’d work in a 23.98 timeline and ‘live with it’ for the other frame rates (usually the increase of a frame rate is worse than the reduction.)

I’d have when I was finished: DVCPro and ProRes. I feel comfortable mixing them in a timeline (prores)
If I was working in a 23.98 timeline, I’m more comfortable with putting 30/60 material there than vice versa.

That minimizes the footage you have to convert.

Make sure you tell compressor not to append the settings name – and it’ll will generate clips that match the existing name.

Couple of thoughts…

First, you can use the youtube uploader for larger files. Yup, you could probably upload the actual ProRes file if you wanted.

If you step through the playback (where QuickTime is dropping frames) and all the frames are there…nothing is missing. It’s going to be re-encoded again on youtube’s end. You’re fine (but you could just test this by uploading)

QuickTime X and QuickTime 7 actually use different methods of playing back h.264 content.

Last, Compressor has a youtube preset – you should either use that, or the Share command inside of FCP, where it utilizes that preset. It’s pretty liberal.

And let me guess, the two that are there are basic and airbrush. Yeah, those don’t need any of the default media.

Those items normally live (unless you installed them somewhere else on install) at: /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Studio/Motion

If they used to be there, motion isn’t pointing to them any more – for whatever reason (it’s forgotten it’s default or it’s been deleted). It’s under yoru prefs

If they’ve never been there, they weren’t installed.

Check the Library tab, content and see there – you should have about 1400+ pieces of media in your library.

It sounds like you’re trying to change the speed of a clip. Right click on a it and choose “change speed”

This will use frame blending. Taking it over to Motion to improve the quality of the blend will improve the look.
